Solo. All of the intersquad scrimmages I've worked (all JV and Varsity) have been 2 man, so it will definitely be an adjustment.

First game scheduled for next Thursday.

Forecast: High of 32 with snow flurries.

Ooohh-rah!

It's interesting to me that so many of the guys here talk about working games solo.  I don't know of any games (whether they be rec, travel, coach pitch, high school, etc.) in our area that are worked solo.  My sons rec league t-ball games had 2 umpires.  It may have been 2 high school kids that didn't really know what they were doing, but there was always 2 of them.  I can't ever remember playing in a game growing up that didn't have 2 umpires.  My dad was in the army, so I played in Kansas(Manhattan and Leavenworth), Oklahoma(2 tours in Lawton), and Germany.  I asked my dad, he never remembers a game with only 1 umpire for me or my 2 brothers.

You're lucky, and you live in an area with a lot of umpires.

Almost everything below 16U and subvarsity is 1-man around here, except a few Catholic schools that hire 2 all HS games.

Mostly 2-man around here for just about everything above 8U machine pitch.  MS and HS JV/Varsity always 2-man here

I've had to work a few games at lower levels solo when a partner has not shown up, but it is the exception.

In my HS assoc, Frosh is 1 man. JV and Varsity are 2 man. My youth ball assoc is pretty much all 1 man, except for travel tournaments.

pretty much everything big field here is 2 umps and small field 1..some of the schools have been cutting back to one on sub-varsity, but that the exception

Congrats! Relax and remember to breathe through your eye-lids!  And HS here my in my frozen tundra of Michigan is 2 man.

Sorry, BigUmpire.  Must have missed that one.  Won't let it happen again.

No issue Just more data for you.

Continuing this thread is fine.

This is one of my concerns.

Next we will be doing 2 games at a time!

I think it comes down to money...the HS's have to live within their budgets and the freshman baseball games get hit first by hiring only one umpire. Soph and Varsity have two.

The smaller youth leagues may try to cut back to one, but most of the leagues around here are smart and have allocated enough money for officiating; it's a high priority and rightfully so.

We simply don't have enough umpires so we will probably be working some JV and C games solo this year. Not my first choice, but we had a couple guys not come back for various reasons and it is putting a hurtin' on the rest of us. Last night was the first HS game so we will see how it plays out.

You might find that this just makes the problem worse.  See, new umpires sign up, then they have to work alone.  They make mistakes (or heck, even get it right but a newer coach at that level thinks they got it wrong)and get yelled at and have no one to help them out or even commiserate with them in the parking lot.  So, they quit.  So now you have less umpires again.

I would never agree to work a game solo unless I was getting paid double.

We have a name for guys with this attitude here in SoCal: basketball referees.
