yea, not a chance I'd call that in a HS game, unless there was more than just the barely perceptible raise of the head.

I don't even know how you call that at the pro level and then let guys not stop everyday.

Or, let Mike Adams double set.....

Or the guy who steps 3 times.

Orioles have a pitcher that has a crazy set. He may be the three step set referenced.

If anyone has a video link to this pitcher, I am looking for one.  I wanted to ask about it.  Basically, why is this not a balk??

Basically, because something is moving during his continuous motion to come set.

Distracting != illegal.

That's not the guy.  They guy I saw is not a submariner.

For this O's pitcher, from the video I can't quite tell what happened before the little dance.  So, I don't know what to say about this pitcher.

I don't buy the "something is moving" argument. He stops 3 times. If something is moving during the first two "stops", then something is still moving the 3rd time when he's supposed to be set, because all 3 "stops" are identical.  I don't understand how they let him do that.

I can tell you one thing...I see that in high school BALK!!!! I see that in summer league BALK!!! I see kids trying to do stuff like this all the time because they see it on TV. And when I balk them for it, their first reply is "the pros do it all the time." And I always say "when you have a million-dollar contract, you can do whatever you want."

You don't have to buy it, but the alternative seems to be concluding that 4 MLB umpires miss this balk every time this guy pitches with runners on.

I think my argument is more plausible. :)

Indeed I would would lose this argument. All of MLB says it's not a balk, who am I to argue? Doesn't mean I have to like it or agree.

Sort of like arguing with the wife. You have to pick your battles. And this wouldn't be the battle I pick.  :smile:
