An odd INT play from the other day.......

I can't tell what happened. If the BR was out for runner INT for the contact with F2 (which IMHO was a little thin), then the ball was dead and nothing ever happened to R2. Why didn't PU kill it? Anyone check the box score?

He had to have banged him on the tag, which didn't happen. He shows safe on the contact, then as the ball is being released he calls out.

Crazy, R2 out on the tag which negates any interference call on BR, BR should be safe at first on the dropped third strike, correct?

R1 takes off on the pitch, pitcher throws sinker on outside part of the plate, batter swings and misses and steps across the plate for a no-brainer interference as catcher throws down to try and get R1. Ball was in the dirt and trapped by the catcher who doesn't know it was trapped, and neither does the batter, nor umpire. Everyone is watching throw to second although catcher has almost fallen down as umpire screams and points interference. What now.

 

Same play, R1 on 2nd and stealing 3rd but batter swings and falls backwards into catcher throw to 3rd for no-brainer interference, on same trapped pitch.

I don't understand how the catcher is throwing a ball that is trapped and he doesn't know it. Sounds like no throw was made. No throw and no a true attempt, no interference.

Play 1: It sounds as if you've ruled BI, but you're concerned about the DSK. But with 1 out and 1st base occupied, that batter is out on strike 3. When he interferes, his buddy is out, too.

 

Play 2: Now the DSK is in play (R2 only). Provided you rule that the third strike was not legally caught, the BR has the right to try for 1B. He may not interfere, however, and I'd still be looking for 2 outs here. Maybe F2 tagged the BR before the INT? Maybe BR intentionally tried to prevent a double play?

Play 1---agreed. Batter is out whether the pitch is caught or not since the runner was at first at TOP.

Play 2---????? How do we get 2 since we have a runner who is safe (or let's just say not put out yet) interfering with another play (at 3rd) and just standing there watching the play at 3rd thinking he is out, but he is not since the ball was trapped by the catcher.

 

What happens on an FPSR when the runner going into 2nd causes interference but he is safe since the ss did not step on the bag. In other words, another scenario where a runner who is not out, interferes with another play, just like in the CI above. Runners who are safe but cause interference.

 

What do you call and when do you call it? When do you call time??? More interested in what/when on this one with the batter.

What and how I call it depends on what happens, which is not clear in this play. One version I can envision: batter swings and misses strike 3 in the dirt, which F2 picks cleanly. As F2 comes up to throw out R2 stealing, the BR falls on him as he stumbles out of the box. Both players end up lying on the ground.

 

If F2 has the ball, the BR is out on the tag. Since he has interfered, R2 is out. 2 outs on the play.

 

I can envision other versions, but for this one, I'm signaling out on the tag, then killing it and enforcing the penalty for INT by a retired runner.
