I know I have seen this somewhere, but can the pitcher wear a "white" batting glove under his leather glove? Correct me if i am wrong, but i think he can only wear a black batting glove under his leather glove.

What rule # is this so i can look it up?

What rules? They differ.

LL (softball) is 1.11 (a)(3) not sure if BB is same number: ..."a pitcher man not wear any items on his/her hands, wrists or arms which may be distracting to the batter."

I actually used this on last night with a pitcher that had yellow, same color as the ball, on her batting glove under her leather.

LL 8.02(a)(6) - The pitcher shall not...

deliver what is called the “shine†ball, “spit†ball, “mud†ball or “emery†ball. The pitcher is allowed to rub off the ball between the bare hands.

OBR 8.02(a)(6)  - The pitcher shall not...

deliver a ball altered in a manner prescribed by Rule 8.02(a)(2) through (5) or what is called the “shine†ball, “spit†ball, “mud†ball or “emery†ball. The pitcher is allowed to rub the ball between his bare hands.

Also, the LL RIM states the following under 8.02

INSTRUCTOR COMMENTS:
If a pitcher were wearing a batting glove under his/her fielder’s glove, it would be very difficult to rub the ball “between the bare hands.†Simply, don’t allow the pitcher to wear a batting glove and you avoid the problem.

I have never seen a MLB pitcher wear a batting glove under his fielding glove.

If it's white or gray, and the Opposing Coach complains, I'd probably have the pitcher remove it.  Otherwise its up to me to determine in my judgment that it is or is not "distracting" - which will depend on whether it is or is not distracting

LL rules specifically permit a batting glove (color limited) so the RIM advice is BS.

The MLBUM says they are prohibited in pro ball.

In my interpretation of the RIM instructor comments, I believe it eludes to game managment.  If Little Johnny rubs the ball with his batting glove on, now you have to call time, and remove that ball.  You explain to Johnny that he can't do that.  Then after the next pitch, Johnny steps off, removes his fielders glove, removes his batting glove, and rubs down the ball.  THEN, he puts his batting glove back on, puts his fielders glove on and then steps on the pitchers plate.

Once would be enough.  The next time he steps off to rub the ball down, I'm probably going to tell him just to put his batting glove in his back pocket & play.

Don't mean to hijack but it looks like this has pretty much been answered - so a different slant to this.  Had a coach request that I make the pitcher remove his eye black.  I said I don't think it's distracting.  I don't really see much of a rule reference to this in OBR.

Doesn't this seem like the same myth of Sunglasses on a pitcher..... If it's not distracting, then Play Ball.

It was classic rat mode, team playing like garbage and he's walking toward his 3rd base coaching box from the 1st base dugout during warmups and as he walks past me he says this and I answer back, he never stopped walking and said "I guess we don't pay attention to rule books here."  Get a clue bud.

I'll bet that if an opposing team were to have a pitcher rubbing the ball with a batting glove on you'd be on the umpires like white on rice to have it stopped. So why is the RIM comment BS?

Rubbing the ball with the glove is illegal - just remove the glove, rub the ball, and put the glove back on. Simple.  Compliant. No complaining about the legal glove - only complaining about the illegal act.

The RIM is BS because it suggests that the umpire prohibit a legal act.

Now that's rich, Rich. Taking off a glove, then taking off a batting glove, then rubbing the ball, now put the batting glove back on, then put the fielding glove back on, and this is a simple process? You're smarter than this, Rich.

How often do you see kid pitchers actually take their glove off to rub a ball between both hands?  I know I don't see it much -- and I would bet the kid who wants to rub the ball between his hands won' be the same kid that wants to wear a batting glove under his glove.  But LL should make up its mind -- either dump the language in the RIM or change the language in the rule to prohibit the batting glove.  I agree it is nonsense to tell umpires to prohibit doing something that the rules permit you to do.  Unless the batting glove actually causes a delay problem, I would think a wise umpire would avoid making an issue out of nothing on this.

Gotta take the regular glove off anyhow so don't build that in.

If you want to wear a batter's glove AND rub the ball you gotta pay the price. Pitcher's choice.
