I think you guy have no idea how easy this play and almost all plays at the plate are if you are 3BLX.... if he moves to his right and stays with the F2's glove hand, he'll see everything right in front of him instead of looking over a runner. But what do I know I'm just an arm chair LL Umpire

Not sure I understand why you said this here ........ ^^^^^^^^^^

Hard to move once he commits to 1BLX here.  I agree he would have had a better view in 3BLX but hindsight is a great thing...

That's my point.. he should have went straight to 3BLX....

BTW PBUC is not teaching you to go 1BLX on squeeze plays.. this is an old school train of thought.

I must have missed all the posts saying he was in perfect position or that's just the breaks. Did they get deleted or something?

Just so I understand - let me know if I am missing anything.

In yesterday's play http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=26919011 , the ball was bunted up the 1BL.  This requires PU to take 1BLX to rule on F/F and any subsequent swipe tag or running lane violation.  Maybe PU can get to PoP to see a swipe tag on R3.  In yesterday's play, we can do a little better, but not much.

In the OP, there were no 1BL responsibilities.  F2 immediately positioned himself inside 3BL to receive the throw and swipe tag R3.   If PU uses F2's inside shoulder/inside hip as a guide, PU would have swung to 3BLX immediately.   In the OP, we should be on 3BLX.

Let me know what I am missing.

At the risk of sounding snarky, yeah, the human factor. I know this is their job and they've been trained, but these plays happen so fast you tend to go with your instincts - towards the play. It's counter-intuitive to go away from the play. Plus, how often do they get to practice plays like this? There's no muscle memory, no repetitive application, etc.

Having said that, I'm sure in hindsight he wishes he had gone to 3BLX.

Sidx.. i would bet to say over 95% of the MLB guys use the mechanic were the Bu takes F/F outside of dirt circle... but once F3 touched 1st why do we as Pu need to worry about swipe tags or Running lane INT...see what I'm saying. Umpire the play.. the books give us a guide to were we should start out, but it is up to us to adjust to that play..

This was set up to be a collision all the way. It seems F2 shied from contact.

IMO, PU was in the proper position to observe this play.

I guess once the collision at  :home: is done away with, we will be able to go 3BLX every time without thinking.

The ball was bunted right at the pitcher.  There isn't a fair/foul decision to be made here.  First steps should've been straight back.  Take this play 3BLX and it is an easy call.  from his angle you can only see one thing at a time.  He was looking for a tag, and completely missed R3's entire hand touching the plate.

Plate umpire was TOO close to see both the touch and the tag, or no tag in this case.

If he moves back from that position he sees nothing and guesses at everything.

Not a lot, just a little.

Then why was it missed so badly?  Everyone else that has posted this is right: If he backs up a step or two and then take the play 3BLX, he should be able to see everything he needs to.
