Yep I had it today while on the plate.

R2.

F1 starts the pitch and R2 is off.

It is a strike right down the middle.

F2 comes up firing as I am pointing my strike call.

I am doing everything normal, calling the strike, clearing F2, making sure I don't have batters interference on the throw, etc.

Then I feel it.

F2s throwing hand makes contact with mine and the ball sails into LF.

R2 was already sliding head first into 3B and was going to be clearly safe.

He jumps up and starts running home.

I put up my hands and Yell Time.

I have umpires interference and send the runner back to 3B.

HT Manager who was on defense came out and asked shouldn't I send him back to 2B?

I reply that in my judgement he had cleanly stolen the base and my interference only caused him to have a chance to score.

Offensive VT Manager does not even leave 3B coaching box to question anything.

No argument and we play on.

After the game the Manager from the HT comes up to me and says "That was a stand up call Blue".

I see it happen and umpires don't call it or say anything.

Thanks for your work today.

Was this a Fed game?

Was this a Fed game?

Doesn't matter.

According to BRD it is the same for all rule sets.

No it wasn't Fed.

Childress is wrong.

Runners may not advance when an umpire interferes with a catcher's throw. Unless he was physically standing on 3B when the catcher went to throw, he needs to go back to 2B.

Verily thou blew it if underOBR - Runner needs to go back to 2B.

5.09 The ball becomes dead and runners advance one base, or return to their bases,
without liability to be put out, when—

(b) The plate umpire interferes with the catcher’s throw attempting to prevent a stolen
base or retire a runner on a pick-off play; runners may not advance.

NOTE: The interference shall be disregarded if the catcher’s throw retires the
runner.

Rule 5.09(b) Comment: Umpire interference may also occur when an umpire interferes with
a catcher returning the ball to the pitcher.

So if it was FED then his ruling could have been right? I was always under the impression that the FED rule was in line with OBR on this. What about NCAA?

I had thought there was a Fed ruling out there that left it to umpire judgment but I can't find it so I may have been imagining it.

I had it 1 time. R1 stealing F2 comes up to throw and barely, but definitely, brushed my mask. No throw. He turns and asks if that was me. Yep. I called time, ate crow and sent the runner back. That sucks.

Childress has the runner being allowed to stay at third on this play?  As he likes to say, Lah me.

(and, I dont mean that as the slam it might seem.  There are 600 or whatever rules he has in his book and theres bound to be an error or two.  I'd take that percentage and I do use the book when I can).

I agree with the others that the runner needs to go back.

Well I may have screwed the ruling up but everyone thought it was equitable and didn't argue and that runner never did score either.

The team that was on offense won 5 - 0 anyway, so it also had no effect on the outcome of the game.

Won't lose sleep over it and one thing for certain, the same mistake won't occur again.

Let's hear it!OK. At the risk of losing the respect of my peers, but for the sole purpose of showing the new umps/new UE members that we are all subject to making mistakes, here goes.... F6 fields a grounder and after fumbling to find the handle, air-mails it OOP. At the TOT, I had BR safe. Why F6 still threw the ball I'll never know. Dumb a$$ me puts BR on 3rd (????? :WTF: ) When DT HC asks about the award, I said, "The base award is from the TOP." Apparently, I sold it and the HC was as big a dumb a$$ as I was, because he didn't pursue it. At the TOP, BR WAS IN THE BOX! I felt like a total dipsh*t. It had no bearing on the game, as the next 2 pitches went to the backstop and there were 2 BB before R3 scored on an RBI triple. I went to my partner between innings and he said, "You sold it" so it doesn't matter right? Well, it matters to me. I shoud have fixed it. Seemed like it was too late, since it was a pitch later that it hit me. HP should have called me to him so we could get together and get it right. (My fault, not his. But conf should have happened). I hate effing up on simple sh*t. What a tool!

If BR had reached first at the TOT, then the award would be third base. Sounds like you got it right except for explaning that it was a TOP award.

Without going into gruesome detail, I kicked it. Completely. I read the time the ball went OOP instead of TOP or TOT. Should have been more clear in my description.

I see.  Then you need to heed the "don't suck" advice more carefully.  :)

Thats was the right call... if the Br and all runners advance 1 base, the the award becomes a TOT award.
