When in Rome, wear a cream shirt, navy ball bags, and hat backward! :fuel::D

Jocko,

You keeping that cream zippered shirt tucked or untucked?  Remember, you're on the plate with the ball bags or it's a new fashion statement?

NFHS, PBUC, JE Max 2 umpire.

All have a few differant ways of doing things.

The BIG thing that really makes a differnce in Umpiring a game is:

Pregame with your partner and ensure your on the same PAGE regarless of what book your using or not using.

Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

So true! Is there a worse feeling than going out on a trouble ball, making the call, only to find your PU standing behind the plate watching...even after you just pre-gamed this situation? I've been there...I've been there with a trouble ball dropping and a play at 2nd eminent. No fun making a call at 2nd on the BR from short RF

I've had this happen one time, trouble ball to right field any my partner in A, he goes out and I take the runner into third, ball is overthrown into third. Some crazy circumstances to get to that point it it did happen.

In my other posts on this subject, I stated that it was proper (I thought) when BU goes out, he stays out and PU covers all 4 bases. Guess what ? I was wrong. After checking my 2 man manual. I see that the BU is supposed to return in foul territory to cover home. Oops !! The 2 man manual for Canada covers this. It happens so little  that I thought I knew the proper way. Oh well ... !!

Although, as others have stated, the PU has the runner until he's called off by the BU, who should only call off PU when he's in a position to be able to make the call at the plate, not when he's 10-15 feet up the first base line.

You are correct but also remember to do as your association says. If they say stay out then stay out. Unless you have pre-gamed with your partner otherwise.

Our association goes by the Baseball Canada manual 99 plus percent of the time.

Be careful in Changing standard mechanic around just because you pre-gamed it. You may have an evaluaor in the stands and he might ding you for improper mechanics. Food for thought. Now lets talk about what jock stap and cup Joe West wears! All seriousness

Midamump is spot on about all the gear stuff.

------------------------------- That's what I been saying since day 1 I joined this site. It doesn't matter that a shirts strips are a 1/16 thicker than the other guys!

Our Association adheres to the CCA manual which has 2, 3, 4 and 6 man mechanics. Since I do 2 and 3 man (and once in a while 1 man) games, I find it to be a great source to follow. I think it's important that  associations at least follow some reputable guideline. See page 54 of the 2013 manual for the mechanic for BU coming back to cover the plate after going out on a trouble ball. It doesn't happen often, but when it does the crew looks like a million bucks.

I notice in tourney ball how surprised alot of folks seem when a rotation happens and the "new" ump makes a call. Last year, I got a call to fill in 1 game of Dixie Majors. They paired me with a "veteran" park ump. When I started to pregame, he looked at me like I was an alien. Guess it was something new for him. Anyway, I'm on the stick (the ONLY way I would agree) with R1. B2, hit and run (I know, right!) Hit a dribbler to F4. 4-3 BR out. I gave the signal for the rotation, but never got my BUs acknowledgement. So, I read the play, and am moving toward the cutout for the throw from F3. "Headed to 3rd!" communicating to BU. No response. Whacker at 3B where R1 slides under the tag. Big, emphatic double mechanic and verbal "SAFE! SAFE!". The crowd went.......silent. during the game, both HCs told me how professional that looked and how they had never seen a HP make a call at 3B (????????????????). After the game, I'm talking mechanics with my BU who says he's been calling there for 6 years and had never seen a rotation

These aren't daddy umps, they get $30 a game! Zero training. When asked to join, I gave a thanks-but-no-thanks. If these guys have zero training, own no mech books, smitty it up every durn game, I want no part of it.

Good call. Never work over your head if you can help it........

Just shows how things are taught differently with different associations. I got dinged in an evaluation for rotating up to third on a ball that never left the infield 👎

Just proves that many mechanics are local.  You gotta learn what's expected in the groups you work with.

We pregame this.  Some umpires like covering third, some prefer the BU gets both ends.  We aren't terribly organized here, so it's typically something that's decided amongst the crew.

First of all I totally agree with MidAMUmp about uniform stuff. In my area, heather gray is still perfectly acceptable. GD pants are acceptable. I still wear heather. Now for the rotation, my assoc. wants the Bu to rotate back to the plate and tell the PU he has the plate. And don't lollygag. I've done this twice in the last two years, and it looks great IMHO when done properly. But as always do as the powers that be say to do.

Is there any set of mechanics that has PU rotating on a ball inside the infield? I can't think of one. Your job is trailing BR up the line, looking for swipe tags, pulled foot, and taking the ball on an overthrow.

Matt, some mechanics have PU covering 3B with R1 and any hit, even to the infield.

This is a FED mechanic, where the plate umpire has the call on any subsequent throw to third base.

Check JE Max 2 Ump.......He also has PU taking plays at 3B on balls in the infiled

Page 103  5.06

Most of the time we pre game PU taking the plays at 3B regardless if ball stays in infield or not.

I have worked with guys who have done MiLB and even one that is an instructor at HWUS.

They will not rotate up to 3B on any ball that remains in the infield.

I find it hard to believe that JE advocates this (and I lent my copy to someone else...) It is a piss-poor mechanic and contrary to PBUC mechanics (which is probably why FED uses it.)
