I had an straightforward EJ today - 12 yr olds on a 50-70 field...a kid came full steam around third, and the catcher gets the ball and sets up for the tag while the runner is still 2-3 steps away...runner puts his shoulder down and plows the kid...runner is a big solid kid, catcher a little kid...i wouldnt be surprised if the catcher has a concussion...so i EJ the kid....

i know the the kid's father from around the fields..he has a well-deserved reputation as an over the top, all about him and then his kids jerk off...before the game he introduced me a coach as "a great guy"...later in the game, the new catcher from the other team tossed a bat out of the way and almost hit one of his teams kids..he's yelling from the fence "how about that blue? eject him"..after the game, as we cross paths on the way out, with his kid next to him, he says to me "can't say I agree with you on that one"....

could any of us imagine reacting that way if one of our kids was ejected from a game for deliberate malicious contact? crazy

I've known a few that can be that kind of brazen. This is the kind of guy who never made the team when he was young and has a chip on his shoulder.

Some guys just can't get past the fantasy that they are actually playing MLB baseball. They know what the rules is but just refuse to accept it. I'm sure he has coached his son to do that and may have even got by with it before.

I dumped a kid years ago as a 13/14 Pony player. He leveled the catcher, I called him out and tossed him without a second thought. His dad/manager insisted he was a good kid and would never do that. I told him I don't know about that but I had him dropping his shoulder, he's gone, end of discussion. He's now 26, he is currently playing in the local adult wooden bat league and as far as I know he never dumped another catcher.

vicariously "reliving" his glory days that more than likely never existed.

"Doesn't matter what you agree with, COACH (said in a disparaging tone)."

Why ? Why not ignore the prick and keep moving ?

Cause sometimes we are just tired and irritable and forget our training. Then we say stuff.

That so happened to me a few weeks ago. Leaving the field after doing a 13U Game. 2nd 9 inning game of the day. 2 hour 45 minute time limit. Game was in the 7th inning and the score was 15-10. No one could throw a strike. we hit the 2 hour 45 minute mark and I call the game. As I am leaving the field the coach says "Did we hit the time limit?" I said "Yes we did coach." And his response to me was "You really need to improve your game management." WHAT!!!! I looked at him and said "Are you joking?" He said "No. We hustle our kids in and out. You need to get the innings started quicker." I looked at him and said "Coach I wouldn't worry so much about hustling the kids in and out. I would start looking for a pitcher that could throw a strike!" I left the field and I regretted my comments the whole way home. But it was a combination of the Heat(105 that day in So Cal) and bad pitching, and a long day. I was So VERY wrong for saying that. I should have left. But I didn't.

To the OP, if this was a 50/70 Little League game, you can eject for Unsportsmanlike Conduct, but Malicious Contact (which doesn't exist in the LL rules). The big difference is that you can call an out with MC, but not for UC, unless you can find a way to inject interference.

As for coaches, or fan's post game comments, I always answer them the say way. "Thanks". No matter what the say, they get the same response, with a smile on my face. Nothing ever good comes from post game banter. Not even if it's seems like the highest compliment, it can go from Hero to Zero in no time flat.

I have had situations where my partner has made a controversial call and have parents approach after the game. Many times the calling official wants to get into it with the parent(s). I will interject myself and send my partner to the car, and tell the parent this a conversation that is not going to be had. I will insist on shutting them down, I have even told them that I understand they are upset but there will be no discussion, period.
