Interesting topic here is whether this is protestable... Fair/foul is judgement obviously, but is the act of un-calling time protestable according to 5.02 or 5.09?

Hmmmm....

It looks like on this clip that Girardi says he wants to protest, the crew confers and then at 1:39 Welke tells Girardi "it's not protestable." Then no one in the crew makes the phone call or signal to the press box or informs the Tigers.

But should it be protestable?

I guess we can learn something here, timing is important on fair/foul calls too.

Girardi was pretty vocal about the terrific benefit of the "human element" after DiMuro/Wise. Not anymore, I suppose and especially not if the umpire, regardless of correctness, rules against one's own team.

You know perfectly well that OBR rulebook doesn't cover hundreds of situations and interpretations that are covered in MLBUM/PBUC/BRD etc.

Now in this situation I'm not sure that Welke could quote Mike Fitzpatrick to Girardi and get away with it.

Are you saying the PBUC says you can't do this anymore? This was Fitzpatrick's opinion when Childress asked about it in 2000. The BRD says NCAA rules this way also with FED being the only "foul is dead" rule.

In which case, you would be right. He's a lying sack of crap and it's obvious that he is trying to blame the umpire for his misplay. He never even looked up at Welke, and never hesitated to chase the ball after his missed it.
