FYI. Got this on facebook this morning from Ump-Attire:

Ump-Attire.com - after reviewing the re-designed Champion hard shell chest protector (P200) we have decided NOT to resell them due to the lack of padding behind each of the 18 rivets.

I have been hesitant about looking at the champion due to it's cost...now I get the feeling I know why.....too cheap to be good...I know some guys swear by them but for me the price was always too good to be true.

I don't think it is a question of being cheap. Pretty simple question; when did they change the design?

That was a general statement that I made about being sensible in one's choice of the most critical pieces of gear. It was directed at everyone, not you ... sorry.

But there's something to be said: buying a $48 chest protector is still about being cheap.

I believe this version was the one that got them in trouble with West Vest:

I think this is the one that got them out of trouble:

Jim does his best to carry the products people want. Obviously, he wasn't impressed the the Champion protectors and thought people might prefer another chest protector over the Champion. I wasn't either impressed when I had mine. There were too many soft spots that were unprotected by hard plates. The padding behind the plates (on the version I had) seemed to be about as thick as an oven mitt. As soon as I upgraded to a platinum two or three years ago, the difference in the quality was substantial.

It's not a bad CP. Go out and do little league games all day and it will do it's job admirably. Especially, for the price tag, it's a wonderful protector for the littler guy. I wish I would have kept my Champion to work with the younger guys, but I sold it for $50. Just recently, I bought a Gerry Davis hybrid on ebay for $22.50. I bet it will work just as well.

I think Jim may have looked at the Champion and realized he already had a good, solid chest protector for the youth ages, the Diamond iX3.

In my experience, the Champion chest protector is vastly inferior to anything with a W on it (or a Douglas and soon to be All-Star). I'm sticking to my Platinum for 13 and over and I am excited to try out the Gerry Davis one for 12s and under.

This is my $0.99, your mileage may vary.

I wonder how many shots to the chest my P200 has left in it:no:.

Hopefully you figure out the exact number of shots before and not after. :question1:

I do not understand the logic of "dumbing" down my protection based on the level of baseball I am working. I really do not mind having a little extra on my side and never having to wonder if I should have worn "the good stuff". I do understand and did make decisions of what I wore based on what I could afford at the time.

Umpiring is the only hobby that I have ever had that allowed to recoup even a fraction of my investment or compensate me for my time. I am lucky to be in a situation that allows me to be able to reinvest my game fees in my equipment.

For the record, I wasn't necessarily knocking anyone who chooses to wear the Champion.

I merely wanted to pass along the notification I got in case anyone is shopping and didn't receive the memo.

Party on...

Here is my 2 cents. The major feature that Joe' patent holds is the fact that the plastic plates can be removed for cleaning. That is what he sued Champion for. So Champion decided to rivet them on. Would I wear the Champion CP? Yes...I would wear it. I know some MiLB guys who wear it. On the original Riddell Power, the velcro was sewn all the way through the pad. And the pad was 1/2" thick. The Wilson CP's are 3/4 or 1". I don't like the Wilson West Vest Line. They are too bulky. I wear an original WV Gold from 2000 with a custom pad from Douglas. I riveted the shoulder pads to the plastic cups so they would fit better on my shoulders. If I didnt have that CP, I would give the Champion a try.

Jim tells me that the rivets are pushed through the plates and the padding. It is easy to see the change in the design in KCFan's photos. In the top photo (older design) the rivets are in front of the padding and away from the umpire. The plates are held in place by velcro straps, a la the West Vest design. In the lower photo (new design) the rivets push through the padding and are exposed to the umpire. I have not seen this new CP in person.

Looking at those pictures posted by Brandon I can see the concern if the padding is compressed at the rivets. The center section has over a dozen rivets relatively close to each other. This would leave little room for the padding to actually do its job.

The one I got three years ago for $41 still works fine

i have the older (velcro) version , it has done well . i have taken a shot or two and had no injury . i also have the douglas for the bigger boys .
