Hello all! I am not completely new but it HAS been awhile. I have lived in Portland OR for the last 21 years and have umped HS and MS ball for the last 6 years. I have relocted to Palm Coast Florida which is on the North Central coast. The closest HS's are Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast. I don't know anything about the organization around here, levels or Ump Associations. Anyone out there have any info they'd like to share? Thanks... Brian Hutwagner When In Doubt Act Certain

I woke up wondering about the WS crew and it turns out that I can't find any info about it. Has it been announced? Why the secrecy? Are we worried about shady gangsters and gamblers?

The online rules library makes it very easy to look this stuff up. 8.3.5 SITUATION J: R1 is at second when B2 hits to F6, who tries to tag R1 but misses. F6 then overthrows first into dead-ball area. R1 remains at second, but B2 has touched first at the time of the throw. RULING: Because it was the second play by an infielder, R1 is awarded home, and B2 is awarded third. Correct. Thank you for clarifying that point. Just to be clearer by NWL I meant Northwoods League and not MiLB.com/index.jsp?sid=l126'>The Northwest League (NWL) which is short season A ball. (and the closest to me :)

Just to be clear, the NWL is a college summer league and not "Indy Ball"

We've got some college ball on MLB Network today. Anybody here working the College Urban Invitational? Are NCAA officials restricted/banned from talking on boards like this?

The answer is D I believe you only need to throw directly to First Base Thanks, I went with D. I don't see the difference except that maybe it ties in somehow to no feints to 1st. It bugs me that I can't see it written somewhere.

With a runner at first stealing, F1 legally turns to throw to second base only to find F6 in his normal fielding position. F1 goes ahead and throws to F6 who is twenty feet away from the base. As the base umpire, you will: a.Call a balk, this is an illegal move. b.Declare a "no" pitch and reset the defense. c.Request an opinion from U1. d.Let the play continue, nothing wrong has occurred. I am going through the test meticulously for the 2nd time and noting citations for each question. The only thing I find close to this is 6.2.4j which has to do with a pick off at 1st and the 1B playing back. I've got either a or d but can't find if there's anything specific in the rules or casebook and I'd like to. Thanks

Are you taking it online? I thought it was pretty tough. I got an 83 taking it straight through without looking stuff up and I am in the middle of taking it again. I think it's a good format, as Micheal says it forces you to study. I thought you could only take it once. In Oregon you can take it three times. It's on an OSAA (Oregon School Activities Association) page at Arbiter.

I have the '09/27th edition. Can I get access to the E version? Also is there an easy way to update my version or do I need to buy another to have it all up-to-date? Thanks. Also I am on board with everyone else about this book, it is great! The alphabetical makes it very easy to use.

We took it last year. 100 questions. I think it was all T/F but I forget. I went back last week and I copy/pasted what I got wrong for a starting point for study this year. Here are my wrong answers: 20) Coaches may argue a strike call with the plate umpire, provided it is done in an appropriate manner. [Rule 10-1-4] True (Incorrect) False (Correct Answer) 33) IT IS A DELAYED DEAD BALL WHEN: The ball is illegally batted. [Rule 5-1-1b] True (Incorrect) False (Correct Answer) 34) The pitching regulations begin whenever the pitcher contacts the pitcher’s plate. [Rule 6-1-1] True (Incorrect) False (Correct Answer) 46) In the set position, the time of the pitch occurs when the pitcher comes to a complete and discernible stop. [Rule 2-28-3] True (Incorrect) False (Correct Answer) 47) The shirt worn underneath a vest type top is considered to be an undershirt. [Rule 1-4-2] True (Incorrect) False (Correct Answer) 60) If all runners, including the batter-runner, have advanced one base at the time of the first play in the infield, the two base award for a throw that becomes dead is from the time of the throw. [Rule 8-3-5] True (Correct Answer) False (Incorrect) 68) When an assistant coach comes out of the dugout to excessively argue and ridicule a call, both he and the head coach shall be ejected. [Rule 3-3-1g-6 penalty] True (Incorrect) False (Correct Answer) 72) A runner, attempting to advance at the time the ball becomes lodged in an offensive player’s uniform, is awarded two bases beyond the last legally acquired base. [Rule 8-3-3f] True (Incorrect) False (Correct Answer) 86) A balk will be declared when a pitcher delivers a pitch while wearing tape on the fingertips of his pitching hand. [Rule 6-2-1g penalty] True (Incorrect) False (Correct Answer)
