I'm looking for a jacket, preferably combo.

A. Should I go black or navy? (or both?)

B. Are they sized about like the shirts? Or do I need a 2XL instead of an XL.

C. Are there any sales at the moment anyone knows of?

Thanks in advance guys :)

First, you really need to know what the umpires in your area are wearing. It's nice to match.

The default standard is the Honig's black, with white stripes. It's a stout jacket.

+POS has some cheap one($30), but they're like a windbreaker. Their older ones, (Gray stripes, $60) are really nice.

The new Majestics are marvelous, but probably won't match anyone.

Right now, the norm is to tuck the jacket in.

I wear the same size I do in shirts.

One of the best deals is this one:

It's stout, warm, good looking, and twenty bucks. I've bought a few of these for my Junior umpires. Oh, and it's has pockets for your hands, which is rare, and really nice for cold nights.

Ya my Dalco jackets are nothing more than a wind breaker. I wish Majestic would come out with the collegiate style black jacket. I work with a guy who has one of Fairchild's #75 Majestic jackets and it truly is a jacket!

I have a Smittys Black with the White Stripes. Its very nice.

I know a couple of other Umps in our association that have it.

(For those of you that don't know it paperiper and I work the same association.)

1. We have been told to buy black if only purchasing one jacket, since navy is being slowly phased out in our area (BC, Canada). But, you should check with your local association to be sure.

2. Most jackets are sized like the shirts. I wear a L shirt on the bases and an XL behind the plate which is the same as my jacket sizes.

3. A previous post mentioned +POS jackets were available through +POS on ebay for $29 This is a good price for a quality jacket.

As far as combo jackets go, the only ones I know of are the Officials Choice combo (about $30) and the Majestic pre order combos (Ump Attire -- $70). I'm personally not a fan of any OC products and $70 is a ton to pay for the Majestics.

Honigs also has a combo jacket. It is the one that most of the college conferences use. It was also used at the CWS.

I have one. They actually run big. I wear a XXL in everything, but I bought an XL in the Honig's convertible. The sleeves are a little short, but the XXL was huge. I typically wear it with out the sleeves, so it is not a big deal. I wish more guys in my area had them. I would love to wear it more, especially in the early season.

Black.

But we usually wear it only on the bases around here, so it can be black anything and match your partner's black shirt. But the size should be a little generous if you're going to do both with one jacket. The Smitty can be had for as little as $45 (sometimes even less). The black with the white shoulder inserts is the one to start with, not the zip-off-sleeves job. That's the standard jacket right now for high school and so on. The navy with the red inserts---or any navy jacket for that matter---is going to be a museum piece in about a year and a half.

I already gave mine away to a PONY guy. I wear a jacket about six times a year in like 150 games, and it sure isn't going to be navy.

I have this one and I really like it. Hard to beat for $29. You can wear it out or tuck it in.

Not all +POS jackets are the same. Look for the ones with the big white label at the collar line. Those are the NOS (new old stock) jackets, and are the good ones. The others aren't so good. The $29 ones on eBay aren't the good ones.

I have Smitty jackets in navy with the red/white inserts and black with the two white stripes. I like the jackets but they are not nearly thick enough for February/March weather here. I have to wear layer upon layer underneath. I don't wear the navy one much so I'm not worried about it, but I'm going to look at getting a different black jacket before next season. I also have the Honigs convertible jacket in black and it is my favorite one, although there are only two other people around here that do high school games that wear it. (My dad is one and he has the OC version, it's pretty nice too)

Behind the plate I wear either a short sleeve shirt, long sleeve shirt, or the convertible jacket without the sleeves. I really can't stand wearing a jacket over my CP.

Question: Are any of the other black w/white insert jackets thicker and warmer besides the new Majestic?

In my experience, the Honig's jackets are a little thicker than the Smitty ones. I have one of the thin Smitty's and it is very light. My blue jacket is a Majestic brand and it is thicker than the Smitty, but they are not made anymore.

Working in Texas I like the lightweight jacket. It is roomy enough when on the bases to really layer underneath.

My Association has moved to Boathouse Jackets. You can only get them from Boathouse. Don't get me wrong they're nice I just wish there was some competition in the market for them and the prices would be better.

But they do look nice.

Picture or a link to one? Never heard of them. Found their website but no umpire stuff found. Or are you guys wearing a different style then the collegiate black?

Here you go.

It is not specifically designed for umpires, but works well. Boathouse does all sorts of team apparel. They're not as warm as some other Jackets I've had but it's nice. I would perfer to wear a more traditional style jacket.
