Thanks for the heads up, but where you been? :)

Haha home for the summer...between working and only getting to call two very bad high school summer games, I just never got on. For whatever reason I just don't get on as much when I'm home. If I need to check anything I whip out the Blackberry, but I just don't seem to want to spend much time online as I do at school.

But, I'm back in Jacksonville, taking 14 hours, and waiting for the call. Got all my gear out last week and wiped it down, laid it out, inventoried what I need, and stared at it for a good 15 minutes. Can't wait to get started again. Missed the game, missed being on the boards, good to see I was missed too :D

great to be back!

Since we are rehashing shirt deals, don't overlook Purchase Officials' everyday Smitty shirt deal: Buy one for $23 and get the second for $16. I just purchased a cream and a powder blue (hey, its NFHS softball season in Mid-Mo) and the cost with ground shipping was $48.62. Purchase offers the Smitty shirts in 9 colors.

I like them as well, but I really enjoy wearing the Smitty shirts. I know that the Polo blue color is a bit different, but I love the way they stretch and wick moisture.

I have a couple of Majestics with scotch guarded cuffs and collars that will make the rotation this year. We shall see how I like them. I just can't imagine making the jump to the newer MLB Mmajestics. I really don't want to drop that much $$$ for a shirt. Plus I see it taking a while for HS associations to adopt them. Heck we still use the Navy as a default color. They were phased out in the MLB probably a decade ago.

I wish softball season was in the fall here (TX) they play at the same time as the baseball guys in the spring. I would much rather call softball in the fall and baseball in the spring...right now I am a zebra and it is fun, but I miss the diamond.

MLB network had some game on from 1998, and there they were: H.S. navy!

I also saw Tim McClelland's plate game in the 2002 World Series, and he was wearing this:

My favorite warm-weather alternate!

Agreed, I enjoy wearing the grey as well, yet few have it...always a good summer alternate when one of my more seasoned partners asks if we can go with the grey....

Doesn't Smitty's have a grey??? :)

H.S. softball is a refreshing change of pace after a busy spring and hot summer of upper level baseball. The weather has turned cooler and we are enjoying temps in the upper 70s. This is a wind-down time for me. The weather is nicer, the girls are polite, the coaches less confrontational, and the fans are less pissy. There is still some fall college/H.S. baseball going on, but umpiring for me will be over for the season around late October.

I took Finn's advice and Scotch Guarded my new Majestics. If the collars hold up, these shirts are a great bargain.

Be careful, make sure you get the correct trim of gray. There are two. There is the "softball" trim that has white/gray/black trim and there is the pro gray like Finn posted. It has gray/white/black/white/gray. Smitty and Dalco have the "softball" gray. AFA used this color (and black) as their official colors. I'm not sure if they still do. the Smitty gray is available at Purchase Officials. The Dalco gray is available at Ump-Attire.

The pro gray is available at +POS for $20.00, but I hear those shirts aren't as good as they used to be. That trim is also available at the Officials Choice, also for around $20.00. I talked to the guys at OC and asked when they'd have another run with their pro gray, they said around mid to late October. The MLB guys used to use gray.

Don't forget, black/white/black 3" numbers go on these!

And don't forget the matching jacket!

Thanks Brandon, that's why I asked. The gray Smitty's trim looked 'softball' like in it's trim......

That's why I always carry two of everything. :)

Thanks for the tip. Picked up a deluxe navy and deluxe powder. $20 each with shipping is a reasonable deal. I really like the Majestic deluxe mesh shirts that I have.

Reebok rapidly became my favorite shoe brand when they also dropped down to $14.99. :notworthy:

I'm very excited for these shirts, I ordered 3 in MLB Blue, Black and powder, so now I will have a collection of 5 colors of shirts (already have a honigs cream -which has a stain & I will need to buy a new cream and navy, and a TeamWork powder blue shirt). :spit:

Unfortunately I doubt most of my partners will have any other shirts than navy and powder. :notworthy:

I just received my order of 3 shirts and I am impressed by the price but I'm not to big on the collars. The one thing I can tell a big difference is that the shirts are sized significantly bigger than my Honig's shirts, I wear a large on both the plate and the bases and my old Honig's shirts from 2009 get pretty snug on the plate while trying these shirts on they seem much bigger than my old ones. I'll be buying some Scotch Guard tomorrow and I hope the shirts grow on me.

T-Rav, ...Honig's has upped their shirt sizes for 2010 and they're similar to Majestics. For instance, I wear a Smitty's 2x and it's perfect for the plate, while just only a tad big on the bases. With Majestic and Honig's, I would do an XL. So, Majestic and Honig's are an 'oversized' shirt for equipment.

Yes, just scotchguard the collars, they'll be fine! For details, ask Finnerty, he's got all the scoop on the "home economics" of umpiring! :D ;)

KF:

Please explain the benefits of applying scotch guard to the collars. Is the issue staining/pilling? Thanks.
