I find myself wanting 1, although I would probably never have much opportunity to rock it on the diamond.

I won mine in an auction. Got a good price. Probably won't wear it a lot but it will be cool when I do.

Congrats on the plate coat and for a killer price. If it is the one bongs sells it a great coat. I wore mine three times this year in TX. As far as earning the coat, you do that with it on your back I my opinion.

You did get it for a good price. You're welcome. I was hoping that somebody on here didn't bid.

SWMBO, bought me one when I earned my Master's degree so that is the only reason I didn't bid on is this year and it was still in transit...(Note the pics I posted of me in my 42 Reg)

This year's coat was for a great price. Congrats to you for the great price. Last years went for about $10 under retail. This year's went for much less.

Post pics soon. My 44 Reg is at Hardwick's as we speak.

Sorry! And thanks!

I also got a tuition for the international camp in Atlanta for 196. I believe the price is around 400

What is all the earn it crap. Where is this coming from.

Don't tell me there is some committee that can tell you whether you can wear one or not?

What is that. The number of games you work. The level. The number of years.

Who is on this hot shot committee? So if you aren't like them, you aren't in the club and can't wear one?

If the weather dictates, what's wrong with wearing a jacket. It gives you everything you need from what I have seen on TV and you look pretty sharp in one also.

Guess I will never get past this fiefdom jacket committee with my backyard wiffle ball umpiring.

Guess I got to walk with my head down and pay homage to the committee the rest of my life.

Dumbdumb,

After arguing about this point with people on and off this board, it seems to me "earning it" comes from a bunch of younger guys not wanting to wear it because they think sport jackets are only for older guys. With more expereince, games, and age, they will find out how much nicer a plate coat is in comparison to a pullover, or a long sleeve shirt. :smachhead::Horse:

Why this is I have no idea, but since I am old, infirm, and wear a plate coat, I must one of the 5 best umpires on Umpire-Empire! :spit::rock:yippie:

So to all of you who think you have to earn the privilege of wearing a plate coat: Please send me a PM so you can send me my prize money, adoration, awards and your visa card number to me for this prestigious postion I am privileged to hold!!! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

I used to road race bicycles, and worked my way up through the local ranks. Every once and a while a newbie would show up with a $6000 bike, shiney new shoes, and wear a jersey from a European team he definitely didn't race for. The nickname for those guys was "Fred".

Don't be a "Fred" behind the plate.

out.

p.s. "Fred" always got dropped half way through the race. and rarely returned.

Would you consider the magnitude of the game as a factor in wearing it? Kinda save it for special occasions?

I wear mine for any college or high school varsity night game below 80 degrees. I sometimes wear it for regular season college games in day if below 80 degrees. I usually wear it for high school playoff games, day or night, unless too hot. Early season especially. Not in summer. Not in fall ball, usually. In 2009 I worked plate for game 7 of University of Kentucky intrasquad "Steaks or Hotdogs" fall ball series. Wore it under the lights on a Saturday night after Kentucky-LSU home football game. Actually had a small crowd for that one.

I did notice that my big games schedule in high school was markedly increased after I started wearing the black plate coat in 2008. Was invited to join college association in 2008 after I started wearing the plate coat. Coincidence? Maybe, but I think the plate coat shows a commitment to the profession. Obviously my assigners thought so too.

Everyone seems to love it when I wear it. I ALWAYS get a positive comment when wearing it.

My two cents.

Is it protocal to not wear a shirt between the CP and the plate coat?

I see MLB umps do it this way, but it looks off seeing their CP under the plate coat. I think it would look better wearing a shirt on top of the CP, then the plate coat on top of that.

I prefer a shirt over top my chest protector.

Two shameless plugs :)

Very Sharp and professional. That's it. I will have one by opening day. Who makes the best quality/price? I gotta have one.

I would go with the Honig's version. It's the same coat that is worn in the big leagues. It's made by hardwicks the same company that makes their poly wools.

I bought the Honigs/Hardwick plate coat this year, that coat is a beast, thick, heavy and is going to last and it's very sharp.

How many times a year do you think you'll get to use it? I'd love one but I don't know how much use I'll get out of it down here.

I think I wore it 4 times this year, even as late in the season as April on a Friday night. Unusually cold for TX that time of year. Even with wearing it those few times, I'm glad I bought it.

I haven't wore mine yet and I'm also glad I bought it.
