I was reading another thread on here regarding players swearing and it made me question a situation I had today in a HS varsity game. A batter for the visiting team stepped into the batter's box. Someone behind the backstop made a comment to him and he turned his head back, pulled one hand off the bat, and proceeded to flip them off and mumble "f*** you." I questioned ejecting, but there had been no real problems in the game at that point, save a warning to the HT's F6 for mouthing after an OBS call. I chose to let it go. After the at-bat I turned around and saw that the softball team (from the same town as the batter) was sitting behind the backstop. Would anyone have EJ'd here?

Well seeing that pro athletes receive fines now-a-days for flipping off fans, I think this warrants an EJ at the HS level. I doubt, however, I would give this the ole’ “heave hoe†type of Ejectio

Yes. At the high school level, swearing is NOT tolerated. Especially swearing directed at a specific person/persons in retaliation to something. He would be absolutely gone.

With F2 sitting right there, and the fact that he was obviously directing it at someone and not himself he needs to be done for the day. It's not a situation you can ignore when you have members of the opposing team within earshot, as they are going to share with their teammates and coaches that you will let it slide, and when it turns out that one of them drops it on you or your partner again and you take action your in the midst of a sh*tstorm of your own creation.

FED makes a big deal about the sportsmanship of players, coaches, and officials. You are certainly well within guidlines to put a stop to this unsporting behavior. Their behavior on the field shouldn't be that different than what is expected from them when they are in a classroom, and I can assure you they aren't going to get away with it in most classrooms when others can overhear the conversation.

All that aside, if it's some salty language out of frustration with themselves, and in a place where it's not overheard by others, a subtle warning might be more appropriate, but this is where you gotta use your judgment, and read the situation. There are a lot of things that can be said within the confines of one on one conversation, that become a very different thing when they are introduced for public consumption, this is one of those things.

I'm not one to go looking for trouble, I know it will find me no matter what, but I've gotta disagree with you on this one Semper. You have a physical act, removing the hand from the bat and flipping someone off, followed up with an F bomb. Mumbled or not, you have an F2 sitting directly in line with this whole thing. When F2 comes to bat and decides to tell someone behind him on the fence to shut the F up are you letting that go too? Are you gonna explain to the AD why the fans are talking about kids dropping F bombs at the baseball game? It's not a question of picking your fight, it's doing your job and fulfilling your responsibility. We impose penalties for poor sporting behavior all the time, this is no different, IMHO.

Maybe at a different level or different age group, but not on a field where FED rules are supposed to be in effect. Just my .02 cents, adjusted for inflation of course.

I'm glad I asked about this. I honestly see it both ways, hence my initial thought that I could probably eject, then deciding not to. One thing I didn't think of at the time was how it looked to someone off to the side. Anyone directly in line with the play (F1, possibly F2, myself, and the fans behind the backstop) could see that he was talking to someone other than myself or F2. However, a side view of that play might have looked as if he was flipping me off. In that regard, an ejection would have been warranted. In another regard, he was not verbally or physically acting towards me or the opposing team. He was saying it to someone off the field that had said something to him that he obviously disapproved of.

I think I'd dump him too. As others have said, FED is really into sportsmanship, good behavior, the like. He's gotta go. If you don't do anything with him, where do you draw the line for anyone else who does something similar.

At the least, I'd make it obvious that I'm telling him to cut it out. I certainly wouldn't ignore it.

The big thing for me in the <acronym title='Original post '>OP</acronym> is the finger. That gets him tossed. Mumbling a profanity, well, depends on who can hear it.

I agree. The finger puts it over the TOP. I'd have an EJ.

The finger is automatic. Everyone can see it. No choice. A mumbled f-bomb I can live with (even at me if no one else hears it and I kicked a call).

Yes, ..."wow" meaning .... tough situation ...what end of the stick do you grab. technically, he's gone for unsportsmanlike,...period, but ....when NOT directed at an umpire, or a player on the field ... that's a slimy, greasy, dirty end of a stick....

The finger though is a very public and vulgar gesture and at the plate, is going to be seen by most of the spectators and benches. If you can ascertain who caused the reaction of the player, have game management remove them as well but this player needs to be ejected IMO.

Ah yes I see that now. I'll stop short of saying that'd be automatic. If it's personal, then good night Gracie but if it's "What the f*%! was that ump?" then that's HTBT for me at the varsity level.

And what if it was a classmate that he was joking with? For me, HTBT. I will warn either way, but I'm going to read the situation. From the inromation provided, I don't know that it is unsportsmanlike.

I would give what I like to call a “silent ejectionâ€. Once I saw the finger gesture by the player, I would probably call time, take out my line-up card as I walk over to the manager of the “bird flipper†and politely tell him his player is ejected for unsportsmanlike behavior, i.e. flipping off a fan, and ask who is his substitute for the ejected player. :wave:
