If Genghis Khan was an umpire, there would be a vast legion of umpires who would blindly and loyally and uniformly defend anything and everything he did, irrespective of reality.

That's the way it is at those other two main forums, which makes them irrelevant to so many of us. I suppose there will be widespread blind defense of Dale Ford--I mean Scott--for this glaring blunder, but to most of us, it is what it is, and it is inexcusable.

Here's one post:

Raising your hands is not "calling time" There are all kinds of reasons why he may have raised his hands. Calling "Time" requires a verbal statement:

5.10 The ball becomes dead when an umpire calls “Time.†The umpire-in-chief shall

call “Timeâ€â€”

Two things - 1) raising the hands was confusing, but 2)the Padres played it out, the Dodgers didn't. You always gotta play it out.

All right, I went over to Childress's site ;) and there are a few who are lamely arguing---and I mean lamely---in defense of Dale Ford. I mean, Scott.

But the reality-based argument---led by SD Steve, Johnny08, and Kyle---seems to be winning out.

That was one of my three favorites! Beautiful.

Here's another one:

"He backed off and came up with his hands but didn't signal anything until he called fair ball. Quit trying to make things up here. He NEVER pointed out the the initial call was foul. And he for dam sure didn't (with emphais) did not, signal time!!!!!!

"What are you guys smoking?"

Partially stolen from another site:

So if a batter swings and misses at a pitch and we signal but don't verbalize "strike" it's not a strike?

If an "everyone knows it" batted ball is 78 feet foul and we don't call "foul" it's not foul?

Do we have te verbalize "fair"?

Lot's of folks don't even signal "out" on a caught fly ball - does that mean the batter's not out?

Yes to everything. That's why, when a ball is fouled straight back to the fence and goes clang, I scream "Foul ball!" and throw my hands in the air like Dale Scott.

All that needed to happen to fix this:

One of the BUs throws DS a life preserver and says in the conference "I saw you put your arms up like that so I also signaled and called foul or time."

The foul mechanic. I was reading on another forum how many are saying that this isn't a "foul" mechanic. *shakes head

I'm not posting this to be disparaging to Mr. Scott. My point is that he made a mistake, (like we all do) he should have manned up vs having to EJ the manager...to all of us on here who work below the MLB level, keep your hands down on these plays. You can always call it foul and return the runners, but if you call it too soon, that's when there can be trouble.

And then he would have had to EJ the other manager. Probably an EJ no matter what. Sometimes you make a call and you are going to get an EJ either way. Just a day at the park.

Will he be remembered like Don Denkinger, player Bill Bucknor, Bob Davidson's fair/foul call on here last year or some other famous calls over the years?

Probably not. Some guys live with the angels. And this describes all of us who have made a bad calls (and all of us have) that are not remembered while others make that same bad call and are remembered forever.

added 4/17

and here is the article you all want to see for the explanation. Myself, I only learn when others who have gone to clinics and the schools and such, teach what they have learned on plays like this.

this one is different, maybe a runner didnt see the swing and miss... at School we are to signal foul on this play.

When you signal foul on this for the benefit of a runner do they require the verbal call also?

I guess I need to say I was joking.

And if there is a runner or runners, I will give a quick signal before I put a new ball in the catcher's hand, but I certainly never scream and I certainly never scream "Foul ball."

Many of us gathered that.

I put most of the blame on the three base umpires. One of them must have seen those plams move forward, and should have told him as such. I'm guessing the
PU
just asked them one question :"Did you see the ball hit the batter?", which is what the batter was telling him. I don't think the subject of him calling TIME even came up in their discussion.
