I found a shocker at the local thrift store. Evidently, a local MLB umpire likes donating to charity, and I hit the motherlode. I'm keeping the good stuff, and financing a black plate coat with leftovers.

Search for "Honig's pants"

p.s. no, I'm not giving up this location. I get new Adidas Climacool golf shirts all the time, and even got an Armani suit there. It's nuts.

They're brand new poly wools, sans the inside Honig's tag. They have a paper label on the waist, denoting a certain MLB umpire's name and number.

(This umpire is a local guy, and is friends with a friend of mine. Nice fellow, and he came out to our local LL clinic in February to talk to our kids. My friend gets some of his hand-me-downs, but these pants wouldn't fit him, thus the donation I guess.)

The high bidder as also purchased a Nike titanium mask for $550, so he's no joker. I guess I underestimated the cool factor in these drawers. 90 clams, with 6 days to go, and two determined buyers is sure good news for my umpire gear Paypal account.

The plate pants just leapfrogged over $200, with over 4 days to go.

Go figure.

That is just crazy. :notworthy: No pants can be worth that much!

My luck I buy them and somehow split them or tear them on my first wear.

I don't know if I'd trust the judgment of an umpire who'd drop two-and-a-half times the price for a pair of polywools.

Good Point! :yippie:

"Hey, catcher; these are Brian Runge's pants."

"Wow, that's great, Blue. Who in hell is Brian Runge, and why wasn't that a strike?"

:hopmad: I could see that happening. :hopmad:

I think that I am going to go into the tag making business. If a simple white tag can have this effect on a pair of pants, imagine the possibilities.

I've come to find out that the MLB pants have white pockets, and the Honig's pants (made by the same guys) have black. Now, I'm not sure this justifies a huge price increase, but for at least two guys is does. And that's all it takes.

Well I respect the fact that you mentioned that they are basically Honig's pants minus the tags. Congrats on the pending auction close.

Actually, I'm using a lot of that dough to upgrade the gear for my Junior umpires. I picked up two jackets and +POS plate coat ($40!) this morning on eBay. The coat is a 40R, perfect for a couple kids I work with. I'll upgrade my stuff, and donate my hand me downs too. I'll go from a Platinum to a Gold, and 450s to Reeboks.

I'm taking a group of kids to work Sectionals, and I'm ordering custom shirts for the crew. But I'll probably have some left over to buy a black plate coat too. See, I've got one more pair of those plate pants left.

If you're looking for someone to donate your platinum too, I am your guy! haha

I wish the little league I did games for treated me and the other kids that well.

We've got a pretty cool program for kids 10-16. As they grow out of their pants and shirts, they donate them to the league, for the next guys coming in. As I've bought new gear, or find deals out on the wild, wild web, I've stocked the umpire's room with some pretty choice stuff. Next week, the kids will have a plate coat to don for chilly evenings. How many Jr. Umpires to see rockin' plate coats and Platinums? Four pair of plate shoes, in various sizes, a couple Honig's c/p's, a Davishield, a couple of orginal WV c/p's, and tons of clothes. Next season they'll even have maid service to wash their gear. Nice, hunh?

(Now if I just find a way to make them hang up their shirts.........)

WOW:clap: I have been umping since I was fourteen and four years later I don't have anything nearly that nice! My bad on saying I could use the platinum, didn't realize you donate to your league

Me too! We got (well still waiting for) some shirts. They're smitty brand. They still haven't sewn the numbers and patches on. We'll have to sew the rest of the patches ourselves. Took 3 years to get 'em, lol. Bought all my own stuff though, good stuff.

Wish we had an umpire room. Mine is the trunk of my Nissan Sentra. The changing room is the area next to the car. I don't care if anyone sees some of my belly.

But, I guess it's par for the course doing LL. Well, there's always the free supper after the game at one field. I think I'm going to spring for the poly-wools for next season. I don't care if my pants are a little darker than everyone else's.

I'd pass on the Officials Choice poly wools for now. Wait until they get the color corrected. The dark ones are really wrong looking. They're not just a little darker, they're nearly black, and look goofy on the field.

The Honig's are the standard. Everything else is, well, everything else.

That's what I mean, I don't like that Official's Choice. I meant the Honig's. Everyone wears heather gray here. They're darker than most of them.

Why stop at just the color? The preposterous thing about them is their sizing. The "plate slacks" are as snug as the most narrowly cut base slacks.

This is how the absurdly snug 22-inch knee Official's Choice "plate slacks" look on the average umpire:

I know a BIG guy who has a pair, and they don't look anything like those. They're much darker, and much more loose. Odd.

Again, I'd pass until they sort out the quality, and consistency. They're try to be the standard, and can't keep their own stuff standard.
