Ok, quick poll, just for the fun of it ...

How many of you were PLAYERS? I would assume most, there are some umpires that never really played the game. As for the definition of "player", I'm referring to MORE than just one year in LL when you were 8. I'm talking players who played a good portion of their childhood and young adult years.

Player, or Not?

Go;)

Player 7 through freshman year of junior college (19). I didn't really get locked into a position until junior year of HS. Catcher became my final position for the last 3 years I played. And, I didn't suck at it. :wow:

I would be one of those that never really "played" the game. Couple yrs in LL, but having been raised a military brat (AF) never was in one location very long. Started doing this as others did - When my son was playing, nobody knew the rules so dad grabs a rulebook and the rest is history.

Not a player using your definition. My career ended at Bronco level I played the league minimum 2 defensive innings and that was all, but we did have a continous batting order where I batted 11-12.

Yes and no...

Played 4 years as F2 in LL until I aged out, then we had a bunch of us that played pick-up games until I got asked to umpire a LL Juniors game one day - been umpiring ever since.

Played 3 years when I was 13, 14 and 15.

Played in a very competitive organization.

We played all over the 5 Boroughs of NYC.

We played 5 days a week. Sundays were always Double Headers and we also played a Twilight Double Header one night a week. Yep 7 games a week.

Organization actually had a "A" and "B" team.

Played 3rd Base.

Replaced "A" team 3rd Baseman who was moved down my first year at the All-Star break. I made All-Stars and he didn't. Made All-Stars all 3 years.

Then played some intramural softball while in the Marine Corps.

Little League, Babe Ruth, High School, and I sucked big wind at all levels... [commence dream sequence] drafted by the Red Sox in the 3rd round, played Rookie League, A, AA, AAA, then had a brief call-up for the ALCS and WS in 1975 when the roster expanded. Sent back to AAA the following season after an invite to spring training, blew out my shoulder and well, that's that.[end dream sequence] :wow:

Played t-ball all the way up to JUCO. After that was cut short due to an acl tear I went back to my highschool and coached varsity ball for three years. Now into my first year of calling balls and strikes

I don't get it. Rosters expand in Sept. They deflate again for the ALDS, ALCS and WS.
