I still find it funny that most guys on here won't wear a Douglass for more than mid level games..look.. I am working a bunch of upper DI games... worked some really great ball in the summer.. I only wear a douglas.. it has way mopre than enough protection...I had a west vest gold and sold it cause i never wore it anymore..LOL

Good grief, Hideman, you find everything funny.

I love the Douglas. I was lucky to score one. I use it whenever I can. But it is not as safe as the Wilson Gold at speeds of 90 m.p.h. and over. There's a gap between the shoulder cap and the clavicle plate on the Douglas. That area on the Wilson Gold is covered (same with the Platinum). I was wearing a Douglas while doing a fall intrasquad game in 2009 with the No. 1 pick in the country throwing 98 m.p.h. I took one of those 98 m.p.h. deliveries fouled right in that gap. The two plates caved in and I was given a bone bruise that looked like a plum. It left a bump that I have to this day.

If you've had no trouble doing high-level ball while wearing a Douglas, then you're lucky, not smart. If I went back out there after that experience and the resultant injury, I would be quite stupid. But I'm not, so I wear a Gold. If something comes along that's better (the All-Star?), I'll use that. The Douglas has its place, and that's where I use it.

L ... O ... L

I had the same concern about the gap coverage on the Douglas, but with the modifications I had done to my Douglas I will not wear anything else at the D-1 level.

I thought I was looking at this the wrong way, but Kev, your'e right ..........EVERYTIME Hai'd posts something, ......it's LOL, LOL, LOL ...........jeeeez man!!

Anyhow, ...why is the Douglas coming up in this thread anyhow ?!?!?!

Because the chest protector is stored in the equipment bag, and some of us wear the Douglas, and this thread is about equipment bags.

How else are we going to drag out a topic like "Equipment Bag" to six-plus pages, unless there are references like his?

Wow, Fitts, I forgot about yours. That's precisely what I was referring to!

But, I suppose with the standard Douglas, 85 m.p.h. or so doesn't cave those plates and pads so drastically that you'll suffer that kind of dramatic blow. Damn, I'm going to see about getting my Douglases (I have an older 12-inch and a brand new 13-inch) modified in that way. Perhaps I would be willing to stand in there with the big heater guys with that kind of rig.

We have a kid here in L.A.'s west valley who may be the country's next No. 1 pick: Lucas Giolito. He's been clocked at 97 with command. When you watch him, he looks just like Kevin Brown, unless he cracks a smile. (Like this year's No.1 Gerrit Cole, Giolito's supposed to go to UCLA, but he may have to take the $10-plus million instead.) I should get at least one of his games this year. He's the one high school guy, where, if I saw him on my schedule, I would wear the Gold for sure. Virtually all other high school games, I wear the Douglas. For some of the premier summer wood bat, high-level men's and off-season D-I scrimmages, I wear the Gold.

Thanks for the impetus to get the Douglas modified. I love the Douglas. I even have three sizes of shirt: Gold size, Douglas size and base.

In case you think I'm exaggerating about the kid I referred to earlier, here's the Baseball America list, which includes his own teammate, Max Fried at No. 2:

NHSI TOP 25 Prospects 1. Lucas Giolito, rhp, Harvard-Westlake 2. Max Fried, lhp, Harvard-Westlake 3. Joey Gallo, 3b/rhp, Bishop Gorman 4. Courtney Hawkins, of/rhp, Carroll 5. I will tell you that switching to the Douglas has reduced my uniform cost. I use to need base shirts and a plate shirts. Now I can wear the same shirts on base and plate with the dougles. With Confrence and non-Confrence shirts running around $53.00 per shirt ( with Confrence logos and numbers applied) the Douglas saves me a ton of money!

Back to the bag ........

Again, ...if you didn't see my Christmas post, ....I did get a Force 3 from Santa!

Question:

Do you guys use shoe bags when storing your shoes in your equipment bag?

Thanks....

Posted

Shoe bags? Yes, absolutely!

Two systems: If they're put away already clean, I use standard umpire shoe bags (it's good for the shoes). If they must be put away while still dirty, then I put them in a large Ziploc bag. This keeps the shoes from soiling the shoe bags or the equipment bag.

I had this funny feeling you'd chime in here, ....I don't know why! LOL

I use something similar to these (but not exactly):

They came from Lester's

I have 13 EEEEs, so I use one for each plate shoe, but the base shoes fit two to a bag.

I see ....

I can utilize my gift cert from Honigs here also :)

If you put your feet together you have one big Snowboard!

Kevin

Why oh why in tarnation did you wear that Douglas with a guy throwing 98 mph seeds? I bolded what you already knew and I know you carry several types of equipment with you. Why not the West Vest this day???? What were you thinking??? (isn't that a line in a song).

I have always appreciated your equipment posts. I also know you factor in the safety factor of every piece of equipment you report on, not only for us, but for yourself.

On another note. Think of all those guys who are both out of the game and those still in the game who wore those old inside chest protectors that were no where as good as today and took the type of shot you took when Nolan Ryan, JR Richards, etc were throwing those peas, both in the minors and in the majors and in amateur ball. They probably still have that bump that you do.

Thunder, are you happy with the Force 3? I am torn between the Pro Nine and Force. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi there!! Welcome aboard! :D

Well, ...your best bet is to browse this thread for opinions on the Pro Nine. You'll also find some opinions on the Force 3 here also. I just got mine, and haven't even packed it yet, so it's tough for me to give any real purposeful opinions yet.

That said, .... I like the construction, ...the zippers seem sturdy, and it's a nice sleek looking bag!

I have see the new Force3 and it really looks sharp. It's smaller than most bags I've seen, so it depends on how full you plan on packing it.

Good luck...I'm sure you won't be disappointed either way.
