i am wondering weather or not this will offer protection for a higher level than the K1 did...

if im not mistaking, most of the guys who have the K1 wouldnt recommend it higher than the JV level...

correct me if the protection level is higher with the K1.

i wonder if one day the protection on a lightweight protector will be able to withstand 90 mph+...just a thought

thanks guys, this may influence me in making a decsion on buying the new honigs protector

The K1 is a CP people either love or hate. I know a former MiLB guy who swore by it and I believe, and please correct me if I'm wrong, that John Bible wears it. So it is suitable for higher levels.

I have both the Honigs K1 and the WV plat.....I wear the K1 for everything sub-varsity. It offers good protection, light weight and superior breathability.....I have however stopped wearing it for any Varsity, Legion College level or MSBL.....

I have taken some shots in the past that convinced me to switch to the Platinum for big boys....shots that hurt me in the past, now bounce off like bullets on superman in my platinum....

It's more expensive than either WV model, and doesn't look any better. Haven't we determined that the hard shell OVER the padding is better than the reverse?

Until someone comes out with carbon fiber shelled, mesh backed, vecro adjusted model, I'll stick with my WV arsenal.

That white plastic poking up at your collar line won't be very attractive. Plus, it will bleed through your dark shirts. Maybe they want that for advertising sake, but I don't.

It does have a lot of great ideas, like the DaviShield. The backing looks great. The collar padding on the inside is spot on. But I want my ribs protected by an outer hard shell. I broke a rib last season, and it's no fun.

Close, but no cigar for me.

Oh, and try not to base what you wear by what MLB guys don. I've seen a few of those new light weight frames with the dangerous padding on the Big field, and that's just stupid.

I haven't seen any real testing to support either side of the argument. And, comfort comes into play as well. I'd take comfort all the time for an occasional bruise (and I'm not making any claim that the K1 is significanlty better in comfort or signficantly less in protection).

Also, I think All-Star has (or will have) a new protector that's of the same type (hard shell inside foam) as Honig's.

I also wonder if the protectors "wear out." That is, does either the hard shell or the foam (or both) stop protecting as well after a period of time? If so, how do we know?

When you hear it go SNAP. And then you wonder, 'What that my CP, or my ribs?' Then it's time for a new one, either way.

1 It looks like the throat protector is adjustable. I like that: wish it was on my WV.

2. I like the lower extension: again, wish it was on my WV.

3. Don't like the biceps protection: I haven't seen anyone wear it that didn't look goofy, hanging out from your shirt.

4. Don't like the velcro strap attachment around your waist: I can see it degrading over time, as it's a stress point (some of us more stressful than others) when we bend over.

5. The padding doesn't seem much more than the K1: like y'all, I love my K1, but won't wear it for anything more than a 13 year old game. The shots I took on my K1 that caused me to buy my WV were right about where the white stripes are on this model.

6. the price is comparable to a WV: I can wear my WV anywhere, but have to pick my shots (pun intended) when I wear my K1: why would I pay the same money for less protection? Bring it down to 100 bucks: then we'll talk..

i can tell you from experience that the k1 does "wear out" over time. you know because the shots start hurting more. as brian said when hear it go snap and you wonder was that a rib or my cp?

I'll take protection over slight discomfort...My POS 2000 is going on 8 yrs old and still takes a cannon shot. Yeah it's warm and ya look like the Michelin tire man sometimes, but---

I like Kyle's idea of a lightweight, carbon fiber shell and add extended shoulder coverage for us big shouldered guys using the GD stance...

But I'm still eyeballing the Champion 200 hard shell protector in probably 17' size...

Here's a link to a guy on ebay that sells those with buy it now auctions for around $55-$60 eBay seller instant replay sports. I wanted a backup to my WV Gold, but didn't want to spend much money so I used the "make offer" option and offered $45 for the 17" model and they took it. It was delivered 3 days later, it's thinner than the WV of course, but it seems like it can take a pretty good shot (hit myself in the chest a few times with a old putter while wearing it with good results). I will probably try it out in the sub varsity fall high school games and stick with the WV for varsity and higher, for now.

I have since read that other people have offered less and he accepted (I heard as low as $35, but don't know if it's really true), so it might be worth a shot. I might bring mine to our next meeting and show it to some of the new/younger umpires as a option that won't break the bank, yet will give you hard outer shell protection.

Here's a link to one of the 17" models that still has a couple of days left- P200 Champion on ebay

It's true. Just do an advanced search on completed items, and use "champion umpire" as your search words. He sold one on the second for 35 clams. He's a huge seller, so it's probably a slam dunk to get more at the same price, as 32 didn't get the nod.

Thanks for the tip! That's good info that I can pass along to our new guys. I wish I would have done a little digging before making my offer...I could of saved 10 bucks  .

Thanks for the link!

Let me know how it goes with the Champion if you wear it during fall ball..I'm especially interested in the clavicle area...

Good luck!

Funny you should mention that. In trying it on, I have found that it sits higher than any CP I've ever had or tried on. The collar is pretty much touching my throat, and feels like it will never fall down like other CPs that I've worn (you know the ones that get loose during games and you have to constantly push them back up). The way the champion fits seems like that won't be a concern, and the hard shell area easily covers the clavicle area on me (the real test will be during a game, but it just doesn't feel like this thing will move down any during a game).

I'd like to be able to replace the straps on my WV Gold with the mesh back that's on the Honigs CP in this thread. Wish I knew where I could get ahold of one without buying a complete CP. Anybody have any ideas?

I did the bid on my champion and they took $40. I used it all year and took some huge shots at the high school level....I can say I love this CP...I love the collar protection and the way it sits on me....Can't beat it for the price..:HD:

I was ®EEEEEEJECTED! by them for bidding $43 on one...

Just take caution in what you are looking for. More times than not, you can refer to a CP like a motorcycle helmet. You get what you pay for. If riding a motorcycle, would you trust your head to a $25 helmet? I'm just sayin....:agasp_:

Exactly true, AA...

I have been eyeballing one of these for some time. Wanted some feedback from others who had worn it..I guess I figured if I had orderd one and it didn't pass the testing at the house, I wouldn't wear it to the field but rather return it..

I took a foul ball to the left chest area this past Sunday using the champion CP and it shocked me because it felt just about the same as shots I have taken while wearing my West Vest Gold (pretty much just pressure, no pain at all). This was high school fall ball, and the pitcher was nothing special, about average (75-80mph) for a new incoming junior.

I am very pleased with the champion, and think it was well worth the money. Because it's a little lighter weight I will probably wear it for all HS Varsity and below games that I do and still use my gold for everything older. The other thing that I like about the champion that I have is it's the 17" model so it protects below the ribs more than my WV Gold (although I have never taken a shot that low as of yet...knock on wood).

I also switched to some hockey referee shin guards that I love! They are so light, and fit great. When I run it feels like I'm not even wearing shin guards and they are such a low profile that I think you could even wear them with base pants if you had to...for instance, if you were dumb enough to grab 2 pair of base pants instead of one base and one plate :agasp_: Which happened to me before, I brought 2 pair of base pants for a DH last summer...not fun at all, I had to wear my partners spare combo pants and he's a size 40 waist and I'm a 34 :WTF. I hate combo pants, but they're sure better than base pants behind the plate!
