I took a foul ball to the left chest area this past Sunday using the champion CP and it shocked me because it felt just about the same as shots I have taken while wearing my West Vest Gold (pretty much just pressure, no pain at all). This was high school fall ball, and the pitcher was nothing special, about average (75-80mph) for a new incoming junior.

I am very pleased with the champion, and think it was well worth the money. Because it's a little lighter weight I will probably wear it for all HS Varsity and below games that I do and still use my gold for everything older. The other thing that I like about the champion that I have is it's the 17" model so it protects below the ribs more than my WV Gold (although I have never taken a shot that low as of yet...knock on wood).

I also switched to some hockey referee shin guards that I love! They are so light, and fit great. When I run it feels like I'm not even wearing shin guards and they are such a low profile that I think you could even wear them with base pants if you had to...for instance, if you were dumb enough to grab 2 pair of base pants instead of one base and one plate :agasp_: Which happened to me before, I brought 2 pair of base pants for a DH last summer...not fun at all, I had to wear my partners spare combo pants and he's a size 40 waist and I'm a 34 :WTF. I hate combo pants, but they're sure better than base pants behind the plate!

Do hockey referee shin guards cover the knee? Going by what you are calling "shin guards" as opposed to what I call "leg guards" I wouldn't think so. But if this is the case, It's something I may look into. My problem is from lifting. My legs are big enough that I wear combo pants on the bases for room.

Oh yeah. Can you imagine taking a frozen puck to the knee cap? Yowzers!

I like mine better than either of the WV models.

Can someone provide a link or website to a recommended supplier? I could be mistaken Kyle, but I believe it was you who pointed out that it looked like I was wearing base pants behind the plate. Well, when you have legs my size, and then put triple knee Honigs guards underneath, I start losing room quick!

I have worn the Pro 9 (K1 knock off) for some time. I call an almost all Varsity schedule and have had no impacts that caused injury or a bruise. I did, however, take a fastball off the forehead portion of my mask and get a real nice concussion from it. As for my Pro9/K1 - I love it.

i am wondering weather or not this will offer protection for a higher level than the K1 did...

if im not mistaking, most of the guys who have the K1 wouldnt recommend it higher than the JV level...

correct me if the protection level is higher with the K1.

i wonder if one day the protection on a lightweight protector will be able to withstand 90 mph+...just a thought

thanks guys, this may influence me in making a decsion on buying the new honigs protector :angel4:

If I could Build / Designe a light weight Chest Protector with Maximun Coverage - that would withstand the impact of a 90 to 100+mph baseball. Would you buy it? How much would you pay for it?

very interesting....for only $35 not a bad pick up and look comfortable.

kylejt, do they cover the outside/inside of your ankles at all? that would be my only drawback...

This from Cardinal fan's Ump-Attire.com message on another thread:

"Ump-Attire.com - after reviewing the re-designed Champion hard shell chest protector (P200) we have decided NOT to resell them due to the lack of padding behind each of the 18 rivets."

Nope, and that's a tradeoff. I wear them with my NB450s, and let the shoe protect my anklebone.

Jeff, yes I was using the older version. I ended up giving it to a younger guy in our association. I bought a Douglas a while back to use (in PONY/Colt and HS) when my WV Gold may not be needed.
