  1. Not much has happened since my post. I was doing a varsity fall ball and batter fouled a 90mph low inside fastball directly into my cup. The family wasn't fazed but the ricochet into my upper thigh caused an injury. The swelling was so bad that my foot kept going to sleep. I'm back on the field this Thursday so hopefully we'll have a good quiet night.
  2. Thanks for all the replies. This league didn't have any discipline standards and we've never had this type of situation. I'm waiting on a call from the rec board president and she definitely upset about it but I'm wondering if there will be any consequences. These are the first 2 ejects I've ever had at this park so it'll be integrating to see what happens. I'll reply back when I get more answers.
  3. I've been umpiring for 20+ years, mainly rec ball, a little travel ball and school ball. I've been doing all the 12u Call Ripken games at this particular park for 10 years or so and now I'm faced with a unique problem. I've got one set of coaches that argue every call, every pitch, even had there score keeper argue with other score keepers and opening day started complaining at the plate meeting. I was pretty lenient last year with only one eject, this year fall ball has started and in 2 games I've had to toss 2 coaches and then they refused to leave until I threaten to forfeit the game. There's no park admin there so I don't really have any options. Fortunately tonight I had a partner and had other coaches from the park witness the whole event and the called the league admin before the game was over. Other than keep ejecting these guys and the kids listen to the coaches be asshats is there a way y'all handle dosh like these that I'm missing?
  4. I went to NC this year to do a Cal Ripken 9u regional and the umpires from that area all worked inside. I asked them about it and they said that's the normal up there.
  5. I'm wondering if the youth leagues that use OBR are going to adopt these changes as well? The pitch clock i could see as an advantage for game speed up. I do a lot of 3 inning games with 1.5 hours hour time limits.
  6. My only input is, these guys may have never worked a 4 man crew until this. I just got back from NC working a South Eastern Regional Call Ripken tournament and that was the first 4 man for me. Too many situations to cover in a pregame when umpires work together for one game. Just glad we didn't have any of these issues.
  7. Thanks, as usual, I'm over thinking and looking over the obvious.
  8. R3 catcher tries a snap throw to third but the throw hits BR in the box, ball goes out of play off BR. Clearly not batters interference but since the ball went out of play R3 was awarded home. Is this correct? I can't find any reason why it wouldn't be correct but I'm just not clear on it.
  9. This is the first time I've had an opportunity to go to an event like this. It's in Clemmons NC, which is a 7 hour ride from Florida if we don't stop. I usually avoid this age because 1 bad pitcher can make a horrible day but I figure at this level they should be able to throw strikes. I'm excited to get the invite and grateful for the chance to travel to do something I enjoy.
  10. Where I'm at we do everything solo, even the occasional varsity game solo.
  11. Doing a 10u girls district game and we had at least a dozen hit by rolling pitches across the feet. OHC comes to me and tells me I can open up the zone, I was looking at him like how?
  12. You're solo, you obviously can't watch all 3 runners tag. I would say you go with your gut and they live with it or they hire more umpires.
  13. 6.03 The batters legal position shall be with both feet within the batters box. APPROVED RULING: The lines defining the box are within the batters box. I read that too say if his feet are on the chalk that he's considered within the box. Am I resting too much into it?
  14. Babe Ruth rules book says foot on the line is considered in the box.
  15. I went to a funeral of a 10yo killed by lightning at the field. The game was already called and the players were losing the field. This kid and his dad were walking thru the gate at the dugout when lightning struck the right field fence, traveling down the fence and killing this child. This was way before lightning apps and the technology we have these days. I have 2 apps on my phone that give lightning alerts, if anything is within 12 miles I send them off the field until there's no more lighting for 30 minutes. It's no joke!
  16. The tournament was short umpires so he stepped in to help move games along.
  17. Cal Ripken 10u small state tournament bottom of fifth inning home team down by 6 runs. VT is struggling with pitching and has walked in 2 runs and bases loaded. Pitching change walked in another run, pitching change then he gives up a bases clearing double home team now down 2 runs with 1 out. VT makes another pitching change and put in a previous pitcher that wasn't the starting pitcher. HT head coach protest them re-entering a pitcher that wasn't the starter and I wasn't sure of the rule so I called my partner over to confer. He wasn't sure either so we tried to call the UIC but he was just starting a game on another field and didn't have his phone with him. This is where we screwed the pooch, we called the tournament director and she assured us it was illegal and therefore it was a forfeit by the home team. We explained it to both coaches and they both accepted the ruling and the game ended. We immediately amt back to the locker room and the UIC was in there so we soldier it to him and he pointed out the error of our ways, at the same time the HT coach had apparently found it too. So to fix it we resumed the game this morning from that point and had them finish the game. At the end of the day we got it right but I can't help but think had it continued that night when the home team was struggling it may have been a different outcome. At least I learned something from it.
  18. This is why youth sports is failing. These types of personalities are tainting the experience for the kids and they in turn go to some other form of activity.
  19. I used to do games for one group that was taking 5 or so weeks to pay. I found another league that pays at the end of the night and never looked back.
  20. Depends on who was tagged if anyone was tagged. The lead runner owns the bag so he is fresher while on the bag it's nothing. If the trail runner is tagged he would be out. If the trailing runner isn't tagged and retreats back to second safely then he's fine.
  21. I'm curious, what is this thing y'all keep referring to, "PARTNER"?
  22. I started out not wearing plate shoes, I wore my black work boots. Foul ball from a 12u girl removed my toenail in the second inning of a game. Never been behind the plate without them again.
  23. My boss always says if you're early you're on time, if you're on time you're late, if you're late don't bother showing up. Sounds like you were on time to me. I actually had a parent complain this year because home plate wouldn't come clean, in the rain. Now she actually said this to the park director, "why don't you get a bucket of clean water or a house so it can be rinsed off between batters." Complaining is what they do best.
  24. Rec ball here is $50 for everything machine pitch and up to 15yo. Everything is solo though but it's less than 1/4 mile from my office.
