I was taught to be in B with R1 and R3.

If I'm working with a guy I normally work I'll usually give him a sign that says "R3, I'm staying". Once the rundown happens I'll say "I got four ______". As soon as R3 scores make your way up 1B lines and say "I'm here ______". Communication is key. Don't be afraid to talk to your partner during the play. Thats what I do and it seems to work well.

I came as close as I've ever come to doing this last weekend. 9u AA State. I havn't umpired in about two weeks because of rain. I had a little mid-season rust. R2 is stealing third. Close play. The throw beat him there and I almost jumped the gun. I was about 30% through my out routine when I realized that I needed to sell a safe call as the tag was never applied, he just held his glove about the runner's legs. Arm was cocked and everything ready to go. I quickly and emphatically sold the safe call and much to my relief, nobody said a word. I made sure my timing was where it should be after that. As for you, did you get in a bucket of horsesh!t?

I'm one of those people who hate throat guards. I hate them with a passion. They dangle, they look bad, and they can be inconvenient at times. But I learned at a very youn age just how important they can be. I got hit directly in the guard when I was 15. Scared the hell out of me. I won't take a field without one. But not everybody needs one.

I too am surprised by the lack of protest put up by each manager. I think the article was right though about this opening a new can of worms as far as changing calls. I think people will start saying "Well why didn't they get together and reverse it?" We'll see. I like the part where McClelland said "Our other alternatives weren't very good." I would agree. I'm not sure what else they could have done.

I vote for no patch. Put the flag up high where everyone can see.

I said this once before but I'll mention it again. Before the season started, a couple of JEA grads taught a class on basic umpiring and then more advanced umpiring and they too stressed that flyballs centerfield straight and back, all the way to RF, U1 needs to go out. As soon as the ball is on it's way back into the infield, turn and haul ass to 4 if you can. As PU, you need to take B/R all the way to home unless U1 calls you off. But like you said, deep fly balls, getting to home may prove difficult. I have a similar story to yours, JM A few weeks ago, we were on the big field for the first time (HS just ended) It was a hot humid saturday afternoon. I'm in A. kid hits a piss rocket to right center. I go out, hard. I get set, watch the ball land and then it goes back into the infield. I'm hauling to home. About as I get to 1B I see there is going to be a play at 3B, I yell "I got 4 ,Scott!" I get to 3BLX and by the time I'm set, PU (Scott) unleashes the hammer. We both hustle back to our positions and I hear players and coaches on the first base dugout said "You guys made that look good." They noticed, parents notices, and a couple of umpires in the stands noticed too. I'm with Brian, get home. You really need to get there, PU in the infield will have a hell of a time getting back to get any kind of angle.

You know, we can say all we want about "why we're out there", money/kids/etc. and I know we only have one umpire for t-ball and machine pitch, but at the t-ball age, I think you really have to be out there for the kids. If they run to the pitcher's mound on their way to first, who cares? If their helmets catch the wind, they will fly off. It's t-ball. Have fun and laugh with them. The parents appreciate what you're doing, the kids are there to have fun, so let them. Local rules suck. I am very lucky that the only local rule we have that sucks is the spread and time limit. Perhaps that league should publish a "local rules book" and give it to the umpires? Great job though, really.

May I suggest borrowing Gary Cederstrom's helmet? Complete with hockey throat guard! Every now in then, you just read the ball off of the bat wrong and you get dinged. It's happened to me and everybody I know. The important thing is, you're ok. Put some ice on it and get out there again. What's the worst that could happen?

To me, his whole ordeal is horseSH*#. These buffoons who go on these tirades are a bunch of little whiners who just want to call attention to themselves, as well as set a bad example for the young ones watching.

I am of the school of thought that the score is the job of the scorekeeper. When it gets ugly I'll ask for the score to know how much we need for a spread. If it's the 6,7, or 9 inning (depending on age) I'll check the score so I don't call "ball game" when the score is tied. It's not my job.

Or a bunch of maple leaves?
