To pick this apart a bit: Is this always the case? What if you weren't the calling umpire but did completely catch everything about how/why your partner called OBS?

Great advice. Counterintuitive as it may be, less words often creates less confusion.

I don't have NFHS rules but OBR says pre-ball in play actions stands (similar to BOO): 6.03 Batter Illegal Action (a) A batter is out for illegal action when: (5) He uses or attempts to use a bat that, in the umpire’s judgment, has been altered or tampered with in such a way to improve the distance factor or cause an unusual reaction on the baseball. This includes bats that are filled, flat-surfaced, nailed, hollowed, grooved or covered with a substance such as paraffin, wax, etc. (1) No advancement on the bases will be allowed (except advancements that are not caused by the use of an illegal bat, e,g., stolen base, balk, wild pitch, passed ball), and any out or outs made during a play shall stand. In addition to being called out, the player shall be ejected from the game and may be subject to additional penalties as determined by the Office of the Commissioner.

In practice it seems the NCAA is looking for the catcher to more proactively avoid blocking / contact "in a legitimate attempt to field the throw" I say that based on both this play and this other one that were both ruled OBS on review. Curious: is NCAA replay done by the on field crew or is it offsite like MLB? If offsite, is centralized by the NCAA or does each conference run their own?

Was asked this convoluted one by a coach: 0-0 count, R1 gets a late break and is slow, Batter takes the pitch, F2 drops the ball onto the plate. Batter (oblivious to R1) taps the ball back to the catcher, who then throws out R1. Is this another instance of delayed interference like IFF or simply Batter out, R1 return to 1B?

So no reason for the coach to keep their mouth shut on the BOO... interesting We should also add: Any action that happened during the at bat without the ball being put in play stands. Runners advancing that were safe or out, and runners picked off are all upheld, i.e. we don't jump back in time to first pitch of the BOO.

What comes to mind: Baker is proper batter. Charlie bats instead. Charlie strikes out. Defense appeals batting out of order before the next pitch is thrown. The ruling is that Baker is out and Charlie is the next batter. In other words, once the BOO is appealed, the skipped batter (Baker) is out and any out resulting from the improper batter (Charlie) is ignored.

If the pitch hits the runner it’s a dead ball. If the pitch was in the strike zone, it's a strike. If the batter swung (including attempted to bunt it), it's a strike. Otherwise, it's a ball.

Digression to funny anecdote from yesterday: did a 10U plate with ParentUmp BU in 3rd game ever. No one one, banger at 1st. BU calls out. It was one of those that "felt" like BR was safe but he hit middle of the bag instead of front so it wasn't that simple. 1B coach was the manager and said "I want to appeal, I want to appeal" (not screeching but not stoic either). It being a new BU I walk the rest of the way up there (I don't want him getting the chance to talk the BU into a change*) and nicely ask / tell "what do you want to appeal? If you think he was safe but he was out, that's judgement. You can't appeal that." Get a mostly blank stare back. "If you thought he pulled his foot, you can ask him BU to get help". "Ok, I want to do that". I gently laughed and said "He didn't. No." And we went back to playing. 2nd digression: My son's HS game later yesterday: 2 man crew. R2 only, picked off into a rundown, F6 to F5 and R2 evades, BU calls him safe into 3B. DC goes out to BU contending B2 went out of the baseline. BU confers with HPU (who had never left point of plate) and then calls R2 out. 😳Lengthy discussion between BU, HPU and OC follows as would be expected.

Play at 9:25. Seems straightforward to me but interested in thoughts (and NCAA specifically). Funny side note: This play is somehow not in the UNC posted version of the highlights. I hear you and am with you @wolfe_man. I was being a smart-ass. The rules are the rules - flawed they may be. The only wiggle I can conceive is, if you believed the coach did it intentionally to game the rules, you could maybe go after unsportsmanlike conduct or similar. Just for clarity to avoid confusion (I know wolfie knows this): "touching" of high fives and the like are allowed.

If R1 is forced out at 2B, did the coach really "assist"?

Sharing my personal experience & seconding Max: I do only LL (9 years in) and use a HSM after starting with a traditional mask. I switched for the larger field of vision. Side benefit is the all around protection as balls do bounce off backstops/overheads (and, for whatever reason, I have a horrible habit of ducking into the fastballs at my face that catchers miss, so that's been big for me). Also, it is very easy to take on and off with just your left hand vs TM & hat that can take some time to get down. The one gear I wish I bought earlier is plate shoes. The toes are precious. Shins and Chest, I've upgraded as I've gotten more serious and done more games. That hasn't bothered me as it's helped me hone in on my personal preferences without spending bigger amounts from the start.

"My commentator" Ha, no. I'm not expressing the message, I'm just relaying it. I think this argument is picking fly poop from pepper but the above is in the LL rulebook. Doesn't get much more authoritative than that (for that rule set). For those adamant that BR to 1st isn't a force play, 7.08(e) should be irrelevant.
