We work our new guys with as many competent veterans as possible. No need throwing them to the wolves.We train them on handling situations, dealing with coaches, and game management. We encourage our new guys to go watch veterans work games, make notes, and ask questions. The biggest reason guys bail after a season or two, IMHO, is the frustration of not knowing the wheres, hows, and whys of umpiring. We keep an open line of communication between our BOD and all of our umpires. Another of the big reasons guys don't return is the money they can make in travel ball. And if they are doing this for the money, there is nothing we can do about that.

It can't be stressed enough how dangerous it is to work outside of the slot. You subject yourself to getting hit by foul balls that are traveling at a higher velocity. Simple physics, the bat is shorter in the slot; short lever equals less force coming off the bat. The bat is longer on the opposite side of the slot. Longer leaver equals more force. You will get a concussion if you work the opposite side of the slot. Don't do it. Set up on lefties as deep into the slot as you can get. You may have to turn your body a bit more but you will get a much better look at the outside pitch. Amen! Amen! Amen! Stay out of the danger zone!!!! KILL zone.....

In big boy ball in this area, pitchers are expected to hit their spots. The coaches we deal with do not want strikes called FOR their own pitcher if he misses his spot badly. So around here, if a catcher has to traverse the width of the plate to stick one, BALL....

Correct (assuming the requirements for R1 to be out are met) FED: It's always a delayed dead ball and the runner is always awarded at least one base. OBR: There are two types -- Type A is when a play is being made on a runner. Here the ball is immediately dead and the runner is awarded a minimum of one base. Type B is when a play is NOT being made on the runner. Here, it's delayed dead (even if it's not mentioned that way and some schools will say that's wrong), and theres no minimum award. You just "do what would have happened" whether hat's return the runner, get the out, or award a base. Also, in Fed, the defender MUST have possession of the ball to occupy the base path, while in OBR he may be in the base path while "in the act of fielding the ball".

If, in my judgment, he was double-setting, then yes, I would call the balk.

I worked a HS semi-final series this past Friday and Saturday. The times of our games were as follows: 1:48 (5-9, 8 innings); 1:43 (3-4 6.5 innings), and 1:37 (1-4 6.5 innings). Two outstanding teams, including the defending state champion in the 3A classification. Then Sunday worked a 2:50 35+ game, lol.... And on another note, Thursday I travel to Montgomery to see Pete Jr work in his first State Finals series.

At Troy University, the turf gets so hot, that last year during a summer college game, the base umpire's shoes began to liquefy....
