Yeah, but leagues have some options on that. I wouldn't supsend a coach for trying to get the kid more playing time. I might insist on "at the next game, make up the missing MPR, plus the next game's MPR, before they can be subbed out" If it is a CBO question, treat them like a late arrival. Which, in effect, they are. Two weeks late maybe, but it goes that way sometimes.

With runners in scoring position, working solo, I tend to get to the library and do what I can from there, partyly to avoid what happened to LRZ (similiar play happened to me once as well--I turned, saw the runner past home, sold "score the run" hard, got no argument.) This may not be the best practice, but so far it's working for me. (I do hustle out at other times, of course, which helps me sell everything I call.) I'm certainly willing to listen to the voices of wisdom here. I think the advice to keep the head up is good, but your conclusion that it's a $50 call is good too. (Even if a BU in C wouldn't see it, it would free you up a little to be looking for it, because you wouldn't need to be setting up for the DP.)

That's certainly how I would call it. I wouldn't call him out if he panicked and wasn't sure where to be at this base (e.g., dancing between the in-ground piece and the bag, confused), but clearly trying to move up would put him in back in jeopardy.

Whatever you find to pursue, may I suggest that your baseball expertise would be welcome at a local youth league which runs its own officials (volunteer or otherwise)? One of the best years I ever had as a Little League UIC was one when one of my veterans was on the IL, and volunteered her time evaluating my junior umpires and offering them advice post-game. I think, as an evaluator or instructor, you might have something to offer and keep your hand in baseball as well.

I take Lyft or a cab to a fair number of my games. So yeah, wallet/phone stay in the cooler (not coming out during the game, natch) so I have a way home after.

Yeah, I concur with this take. I would rule out on the grabbing to return to a missed base, and let the protest sort it out.

For the Little League I run, we have ~60 junior umpires. We provide gear at all our fields (a sadly large amount, since we don't have a central complex, but that's another story.) It would be crazy to ask a 13/14 year old to buy their own gear, of course, but we allow any adult volunteers to use it too. That's not a model that could work in a "real" association, of course, but just thinking out loud, would it be possible for an association to invest in loaner gear? As in here, you can use this basic, low level set for one season, return it to us, and then we expect you to get your own if you're sticking with it. I can instantly see lots of difficulties, liability among them, but I'm just spitballing here.

That's where I've ended up in this situation in our 50/70 LL division. I like that it lets me read F6 as well as the ball after it's hit.

Likewise, I've listed it and used it as discussion points as spoken of above. There's definitely people skills, crisis management, and performance under pressure that you can point to as positives. In my case, since I'm UIC for our local Little League, I've also been able to point to management experience of a sort.

Oh yes, that's absolutely true. I just would have liked a reality check on my plate game. The real answer is "get myself to a darn clinic" but it's been a lower priority over the years than family stuff. Now that my daughter's a little older and less needy I should be able to make that work. At least, if I wait to bring it up until I've been home again for a while.

Got to work my first full state Little League tournament this weekend, Intermediate level (50/70 baseball.) Sadly didn't get a plate game to get evaluated on, as we didn't realize my crew's field of the two was in my own league's half of the loser's bracket, and they won their way out of it all the way to the final. Alas. Still, worked with a great group of umpires, learned a lot, had a great time, saw some great baseball, got work proper six-person and get instructed in that.

I will check in on a youth player to see if a coach needs to be summoned. But no, ultimately that's on the coaches to come out. I mean, I'm going to check in on the catcher when he gets whacked, and if it's a minor thing (e.g, grounder off the shin) I'll try to get the kid to tell me if he's good to go. But treatment should be left to the coaches.

In Little League, catchers who catch four innings in one day (one pitch caught = caught for an inning) may not pitch the remainder of the day. Other youth leagues may be doing their own thing.

I agree, out because of the tag of the base. As for waiting, not even the LL Rules & Instruction Manual clarifies. I have always taken it to mean "sufficient time that the runner can actually react by sliding or attempting to get around" which is a really HTBT ruling. (Don't take the quote phrase as authoritative; just using quotes to delineate my reasoning). I don't think I would have it as you describe--I think this a out and a train wreck.

You haven't lived until you've officiated a game of Brockian Ultra Cricket. You're rarely allowed to live afterwards either, but that's another matter.

I see this all the time in Little League districts...only it's worse because it's the big kid throwing heat to the 7-8-9 hitters who have no chance of catching up and no power if they do. Then they futz with the curve ball that they have no control of, and end up missing when they go back to the fastball. I want to scream, "You're on a pitch count--blow that kid away! Save the change of speed for the kid your size who can take you deep."

Do you rip the sleeves off your umpire polos too? Cause with arms like those I totally would.
