In my experience, this has never once been the case. "No. I am not going to discuss the strike zone with a coach before, during, or after the game. PERIOD." grayhawk. IMHO, if you are discussing Ball location you are telling a manager your Strike location that YOU said you would never do. Now we can disagree, but mentioning your Ball locations when asked, is just stating the "not a strike location!" So I choose not to discuss Balls and Strikes with Managers, and call Ball and Call Strike. I answer the question before it gets asked. As a result, coaches don't wonder and get frustrated. It works extremely well in HS ball. Giving in/out on close pitches isn't "discussing my zone" and your pathetic attempt to use one of my other posts to try to prove your point is insulting. Umpires that work levels I work (and levels far above) agreed with my opinion on this, so that's plenty good for me. Sorry you felt I was being pathetic. I was only pointing to the irony in your positions. I choose not to explain my zone. In that we agree. You leave more wiggle room. I am not looking for anyone to agree with me, I am also not known on the field as a red a$$. I call a good game, I hustle my ass off and I do it all for free. I enjoy the feedback, I read it all, I just don't happen to agree. As BigUmp mentions, I might mention to the catcher to pass along. And there is the biggest difference. Grayhawk, myself and probably quite quite a few others in this board are umpiring High School and College baseball. The first time one of those coaches asks me where a pitch is and I say "ball"! I can guarantee you World War 3 is going to follow, with me having to toss the Head Coach. And just for the record saying Ball inside or Ball outside is not even close to, "My Strike zone is armpits to shins. I will give your pitcher 2 balls outside and 1 inside. And the first time you don't call an armpit strike all hell breaks loose. No Thank You. Like I have said before, I do say Ball inside or Ball outside. But usually only on a 1-2 count or a 2-2 count when it just misses. When i feel a coach really wanted that pitch. I let him know where i had it. I don't say it on a 2-0 count. It is personal preference. But to say that is discussing my strike zone? Sorry Danny, you swung and missed on this one. I worked PIAA for 13 years, but thanks, I get it. Been doing this for over 30 years now. As I said, I have my way. Not preaching.

No. I am not going to discuss the strike zone with a coach before, during, or after the game. PERIOD. But isn't calling Ball Inside, Outside, High and Low discussing your strike zone? Same thing to me. If you are explaing your Ball zone, you are discussing the strike zone. Just saying,!

I think by calling location even once, you open up for more questions on every pitch. I just call ball and stay down an extended period. HC:"Blue, Blue, where was that?" PU: "Ball." HC: "Not what, where?" PU: "Ball" HC: "Oh"

My broken heart?

I don't give location. I have the best view. No need to say where.
-
Wow, just wow!! I use to tell my leagues coaches, "I call what I see." Good job and I am happy you represented well!
-
I only wear one. Most times in LL you only get 2 to 3 balls anyway!

What rule would you change or add?

I have umped in an emergency my sons game. No ump showed, I was in the stands. As long as both managers were good. Called my son out as he watched strike 3 come straight down the pipe. Needed a food tester in my house for a week. (I also broke the golden rule, as I wore shin guards over my jeans for that game and did not have plate shoes. ) Flame on.

All I know is when I left the Coast Guard I wanted to be a Tugboat Captain. Since I was not related to anyone, that didn't pan out. While waiitng I got into Telecommunications and now am VP of Operations for a global company near Hollyweird, CA.

Now that, right there, made my day!! It's fair, it's foul, it's fair, it's foul......

My ears were burning!! First off on the ejection. No way that HC comes into play following game. TD can't make up the rules. (Plate meeting, gone? I like that) 2ndly, I have been very lucky that I make a great living. That has allowed me to work for free and feel like I am giving back. I never critisize anyone working for the $$ as long as they earn it. When a league needs to spend 50% of it's money on Umpires instead of money on the program, decisions need to be made. I have an incredible love of the game, and I have an incredible love of Little League baseball and what it teaches.(If done right) When I retire, I promise that I will join an umpire association that pays me, to help offset my 401K and SS$.

Hi and welcome. IF you get involved in your local Little League they might set you with some gear. As I brought in umpires I would, upon making good on their assignments, give them gear along the way. Shoes and pants on you. But shirts, hats, gear can be bartered for time donation.

Great to hear from " The Man" Thank you BU!! Been traveling a lot for new job, not going to umpire this year. Can't know what country I will be in from week to week. Canada next week, South America the following. I have missed the time I used to have!!

Hello there!!
-
LL is for each league you serve, too. At least I know one year I did 5. I also have the PA State Police run me every year to supply the PIAA. 10 bucks on line. LL is free, or it has been for me at many leagues. No fingerprints in my history.

I'm thinking the Young ump should get an extra free hot dog!! He called this perfect!

I also like the FNS-9. Better 1911 grip angle and incredible trigger break. Very consistant. Are you looking for it as a daily carry, or target? 5 inch barrel is tough out of holster IMHO. Have you fired the S&W MP 9s? (The FNS has a more difficult takedown, just saying) The M4 looks great with a bayonet. Build your own AR and make it truly your own. Owning a ready made will let you see what you would do, and then it's off to the races.

No green laser pointer?? Tsk, tsk... I like the lower. Very perty... Illegal in California and New York in case you are traveling with it,

Thinking of you! Hope you are following the doctors orders and taking the pain meds. I tried to follow my own direction when I tore my hamstring. Set me back a week in recovery. The doctors are usually right. when it comes to pain they have great drugs. Take them and try to rest. ESPN, ESPN2 and Sportnet was made for men to recover by!

Thanks for letting us know!! I hope you continue to feel well without the drugs, but take em if you need em.. Rest up!!
