Wierdest thing to Happen on Field?
guyinaredhat replied to MB_Ump's topic in Off-Topic/Funny Stories
Our tournament fields are in a wierd area, lots of industrial complexes , landfill, and right on the bay. A few weeks ago PG& E (the folks who brought you the San Bruno pipepline explosion) decided they needed to drain some sort of pipe. Well my partner and I are comming back from a break, and from the parking lot we heard IT. Loud rumbling like being on an airport tarmac. Well turns out right behind our field bout 100 yards from 2nd base they were draining the pipe and it was LOUD. Really loud, so loud we went into a sound delay because we had to shoult at the plate meeting and still had problems. First time i ever had a game go into too loud delay. -
when the pitch comes in, I decide what it's going to be turn the dial on my indicator and then call it.

old shirt? You mean the long sleve black? it's an older style but Majestic doesn't make a long sleeve shirt. RIght?

I work for 2 different Companies that run USSA tourneys. 1 company i work for strictly enforces that If a team decides to bat everyone or they only have 9 players , and they lose a player for any reason , then they would take an out every time that spot came up. the other company is more lenient and has a bylaw that says they will not lose an out if it's due to injury, but would lose an out if they lost a player for any other reason.

Communication and timing is the key here . If neither umpire has the quick trigger, the PU can make eye contact with the BU , and communicate that he's got the call.

I've been coaching a very bad middle school baseball team this season. We've had the same umpire for all our home games. I've learned I've been doing things all wrong ... Slip on Vans are the perfect umpire shoe, comfortable, affordable and oh so stylish , bonus points for the oldest greyest model you can find, Softball powder blue is the perfect color to show off that you're up on the latest in umpire fashion. Don't point , and barely verbalize strikes. Who cares if the players and coaches don't know what the pitch was or the count , too bad for them. Emphatically point all around when it's a ball . This shows off your keen knowledge of the zone and helps the coaches know where the pitch missed . oh and of course Call em from behind the mound .

sequence went like this runner breaks strike crosses the plate, tag is late hammer strike signal Safe "NO RUN , NO RUN"
-
yea seems to be an easy one, but how many of us have seen it??? I saw the runner coming and as the pitch is coming in, all i can think about is call the pitch first then signal safe or out. I hammered the strike but my mind went blank that it was strike 3 . I hammered the strike , then signaled the runner safe, then it hit me that the batter was out and I went into the "No run , no run"

tournaments tend to up your game count. My new work schedule shot my high school season. Although my assignor likes me enough to throw me a few night games now and then to add to the game count.
-
Well i guess that would depend on if I'm working a game, or a tourney(Multiple games in da day) For a tourney give me the heat , a day of 5 games in the miserable weather sucks 40 degrees, 25 MPH winds , no matter how much you layer up it's still a miserable day. For a single game, I'll still take the heat, sure it takes more out of ya but I can wear my short sleeve majestic blue which hasn't gotten much love this season. Oh Wait you said humidity. What's that??

Pony game (13-14) OBR ruleset w/ Pony By Laws 2-2 2 outs r3 Pitcher from the wind up, r3 breaks on 1st movement to steal home. Beautifull curveball in the zone, runner slides in ahead of the tag. WHatcha got? I'll tell ya what I did later.

I live in northern california, about 3 hours from snow country in the winter. Early this season( All of Jan) we had some reallllly cold weather. I went to both Target and Walmart trying to look for somehing I could use, and had ZERO luck. I did have luck finding a compresion long sleeve thermal (Starter brand) @ Walmart that I layer up with. Since you live in a colder part of the country you may have more luck.

had something that I've never seen today. ' No on on no one out, B1 has 0-2 count 3rd pitch B1 swings and misses the pitch on the backswing he hits the catchers mitt and knocks the ball loose. What cha got??
-
and don't go to the plate meeting with your fly unzipped like i did tonight.
-
Almost looks like he got blocked out and couldn't see if the catcher had still had possesion of the ball . He starts 3b Line extended and rotates into the infield? looks like he should have moved into foul territory. But hey the call was right.

Had a JV DH today, last rounds of a tournament. I was fortunate to have the championship game, a really excellent 1-0 game. The HT had a combined 1 hitter, and there was a total of 5 hits for the game. But the coolest thing was the winning pitcher , kid went 5 2/3 allowed 0 runs. He had 1 arm, or more specifically no forearm, nothing from the elbow down. He worked it Jim Abbot style, smooooooth, pitched well, and even picked a kid off. Good way to end a long day.

Probably no mercy rule. 80 % of the HS' here have NO mercy rule and I've seen a score get as high as 32-1

I believe Crash Davis said it best "Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You'll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you'll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press'll think you're colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob."
