  1. Thanks - I’m home and getting stronger every day. No opinion on his zone. He’s missed a few which is expected. I’m more interested in mechanics because that’s how to fix an inconsistent zone.

  3. Watching the NE Regional Championship PU reminds me of why verbaling strikes down is a bad mechanic. I think it makes him come up too quick on balls and he’s struggling with the crowd because they think he’s going to call a strike on some close pitches but he’s not.

  4. I don't think either part of that is the rule. The rule never said this -- it said (and either the rule or the interps still does) that a runner is allowed to go behind the fielder without being called for "out of the baseline" (which experienced umps recognize is meaningless since the rule only applies when a tag is attempted) or for "out of the running lane" if the play is to first (also nearly meaningless)

  5. Luckily it had no effect on the game as Jerry Lane's premature time call did not either have an effect in his game: But without video, I have seen PUs hit by pitches throw their hands up. Was the hands up in reaction to being hit, reacted acted upon? Or was it an actual kill of the ball? Luckily for Layne it was not and was not even noticed or commented upon. Need Video.

  6. Just for the record, I'm not looking to convince anyone of my stance nor saying theirs is incorrect. I find it quite interesting that several competent officials can look at the same thing and see different and contradictory elements.

  9. I like your venture, and endorse what you’re doing; however, if you’ve spent... then you missed Honig’s. In its role as “official” (unadvertised) MLBU outfitter, Honig’s supplied and stitched on all the numbers for MLB Umpires, on all shirts, jackets, and plate coats. You can’t get any more authentic. I’m welcome to see what you’ve got. I will encourage you to resist the whining, griping requests you probably get ever so often for 4” red numbers – let that arcane practice die in HS navy shirts.

  10. I know and today I'm not whining because I didn't take a single hit. Scouts who were at Wednesday's game asked me if I had healed yet.

  12. 1) Leaving position to argue balls and strikes (since the play happened two innings prior, this provision is satisfied by default); 2) Making reference to said call using video replay that, according to Soto at least, purportedly contradicts the on-field ruling (the px/pz #s support the strike call as correct). Two Standards for Removal satisfied = immediate ejection.
