Happy New Year!

Me and a fellow umpire buddy are leaving for TUS this Tuesday.  I've set up a blog if anyone is interested in following along with a 51 year old guy trying to navigate through pro school! LOL! I plan on blogging everyday, mostly as a way of letting my wife and kids experience the trip with me and to keep a journal that will help me remember each days events. Hopefully, I can give everyone some insight as to what pro-school is all about. There won't be any bashing, drama, badmouthing, or letting out anything innappropriate. Just a short story everyday about how I'm working my way through something not everyone has experienced. I'll keep it positive and professional each day. If you like, check it out at the link below:

While I don't post that much here, I do read often and appreciate what this site is all about. All the discussions here have made me a much better umpire.

John

Dont want to be a wet blanket BUT is TUS OK with this? @JonnyCat

When I went to Evans LONG ago, before the internet, we were told " what happens in camp, stays in camp.

If its OK this will be great!

I have one on my young guys at Harrys and he states he is relearning plate mechanics.LOL!

Definitely won't be a tell all. LOL! I know TUS monitors this site and I'm sure they won't have an issue with it. I hear what you are saying though, I don't want to and won't ruffle any feathers. Although I am no literary giant, I want to treat it with the same respect and insight as the book "As they See 'Em". I thought that book was a great read and good insight. My post won't be nearly as long. Just a brief synopsis of each days events. They know I'm not looking, nor would I be considered for a job. With that being said, I will respect their wishes on any privacy issues they may have. It's a long time for me to be away from home, so blogging is a way to keep connected with family and friends back home, and pass the time.

I'm a 2012 TUS grad (at age 64 then).  You'll have the time of your life there at Dodgertown - called Vero Beach Sports Complex when I was there. Your legs will definitely let you know about it after the first week, and you'll be given the same attention and treatment by the instructors as that toward the 20 yr olds there, too. I look forward to reading your blog...

Thanks Guys!

Plane leaves tomorrow morning. Gotta be honest, I'm a little nervous. Ok, more than a little! LOL!

John,

At 51, and a demonstrated 'common sense' umpire on this forum, I know that you're expectation aren't to make it to the big leagues, right?  (NOT meant to be a negative comment)

That being said .... relax and be a sponge, ...soak it all up and learn!  Enjoy it, and come back kicking ass!!

Good luck, have fun, and I'll be reading!

This will be one of the most viewed posts on the forum IF this John has the time and energy to write after getting beat up every day.

LOL! We'll see, some days the blog entries might be short! I'll bring plenty of Advil for these old bones!

On the ground, finally! It’s been a long day of travel, but we are in beautiful Vero Beach, Florida. Just checked in to the Howard Johnson’s. Its about 11:00 pm, Florida time. School actually starts tomorrow, check in is between noon and 5:00pm, with orientation beginning at 7:00pm. Since we were traveling from the west coast, […]

Today was check in and orientation. We got up early and headed over to DodgerTown to check the place out. Check in began at noon, but we arrived early to tour the facilities and get a feel for where we are about to spend the next 4 weeks of our lives. The place is absolutely beautiful and […]

Nice John .... thanks for that!

Re: your point about being older and the affect on others competing for a pro position, hogwash!  You probably have  better overall skills than a lot of kids out there, so just do your job and work hard and people will see IMMEDIATELY that you're there to get better.  Trust me, you'll have zero issues!

Thanks for doing this, ... good reading!

Remember the story about the young bull and the old bull standing on a hill looking down at all of the cows.

I got to see Dodgertown in the summer of 2013 on vacation. Stopped by on the way back to Orlando from Jupiter. They had a high school-age tournament of some kind going on on the main field. The place is really nice.
