How about not just escalation, but maybe equity?  While I am not opposed, a $250 fine would be a "death sentence" for a parent at the school I teach at.  A few miles up the road at the private parochial school, $250 is a pittance of a price to abuse officials, probably a few each week.

If the penalty is a fine, it means it's only illegal for poor people.

Wait a minute... the fine is to deter unsportsmanlike behavior.  What does that have to do with a family's income?  Its not like them being unsportsmanlike is a choice between putting food on their table or not.  Just stop being an ass.  Better yet, stop being an ass after getting a warning which is usually done before the ejection. Just stop being an ass.

Any solution put forth will be a burden for a low income family IF, IF, IF they commit the behavior.  Community Service?  They have to pay for the gas or bus fare to get to the community service. Clean the stands or parking lot after the game?  A burden.  Standing before the game selling programs or running the concession stand, a burden.  Just stop being an ass and you won't have to worry about it.

I think that overall we need a little punishment, to get the word out there that “ Fans are there to watch a baseball game, not to verbally or even physically abuse umpires”! I agree that Family income and personal things have nothing to do with anything, I think that we just need to get the word out that we are not going to just let this abuse just happen without any punishment and maybe then the focus will be on the kids or players. That is my two cents, for what it is worth! HAPPY UMPIRING!!!

The irony of all of this is, was and will be...we all (officials, parents, coaches, ADs, principals, superintendents, etc...) all of us want "sportsmanship" and "good behavior" and just a general positive and rewarding atmosphere around youth sports. If you sat everyone down and showed them 10 or 12 minutes of game footage showing negativity, undesirable and otherwise deplorable actions and words from a variety of youth sports from around the world, all of those stakeholders in our game would look at that and say how negative, undesirable and deplorable people in the footage are behaving and speaking. Yet...one struggles to look internally and consider themselves. No one ever thinks they are the problem. No one can ever police their neighbor who has been a problem parent since TBall and now after 12 years of bad behavior and bad choices and another season is getting ready to start and WE ALL KNOW that person is going to be a problem again this year and oh look! that person is sick this week and my oh my, didn't we all just have a wonderful time in that person's absence?...no one can ever sit that person down and politely explain to them that they need to stop or stay home. But, like The Warden said, "What we have here is a failure to communicate. Some men...you just can't reach."

It should not land on the officials to summon the AD or other authorities to deal with a problem spectator. The community either needs to police itself or the authority needs to be on duty, alert, trained and empowered to counsel and eject persons requiring counseling and ejecting. You literally work with children daily. I'm sure a few inappropriate adults are easily handled...and once a few are handled you start a culture change and magically, mystically folks start getting the message and learning about what is and isn't appropriate at a youth sports event.

Sorry for getting political . . . I am not saying don't fine the poor family.  I am saying you have just made it the price of admission for some "privileged" people and said it is OK, rather than having made it a deterrent.

You really want to make their blood boil (or curdle)? Make the fine check payable to (a) local umpire / officials development program. Or, to fund the procurement of a locker room / change room for officials, so we don't have to be approached by you yokels in the parking lot while we're trying to undress, redress & leave.

That'll get 'em squirming.
