No. Like [mention=1586]Jimurray[/mention]said. The radar goes up. It certainly doesn’t mean I haven’t had high school partners with black that shouldn’t be on a varsity field either. And it doesn’t mean every guy with only navy isn’t good. ( though I’ve yet to work with “ only navy “ guy who excels, I’m sure he’s out there somewhere. )

But hey, the association leads / guy-who-makes-the-decision is getting their / his kickback on every shirt sold. Fastest way to make money as an umpire? Host an umpire camp / clinic, baited with a who’s-who list of notable umpires who will be “evaluating”, or arrange and impose a uniform code on your association.

Yikes, I fear for him. On the one hand, I would verbally chastise him (as a fellow umpire) for going out there equipped so pathetically… but we do have an umpire shortage, and I appreciate whatever involvement he can give. 

Seriously, too, why aren’t the Smitty’s and Cliff Keens of the industry just giving away outdated styles of umpire shirts (and pants, while they’re at it)?!?! Really?! You’re just going to keep producing two-stripe shirts in cream, black, grey, red, n… oh… I answered my own exclamation. Because the NFHS book still declares the shirt “shall be navy”, the producers still keep producing that antiquated shirt cuz some pedantic ol’ state group keeps buying them. 🙄

Alternate view:  my local little league (for 7-9 year olds) has parents act as the PU for coach-pitch games, and furnishes them with a mask. It's possible this is a local low-level league.

I will say, however, that even for LL Majors games (in my area *most* have umpires, but some don't) where a parent has to act as PU/BU/UIC there's a loaner set of gear at each field.

We have no balls or strikes below kid pitch. You got 5 pitches (well "one more, one more" was in play) at coach-pitch or machine. Coach-pitch would then go to a tee.

We are first and foremost parent or coach based. Each team gets assigned slots and they need to fill them, same as finding parents to work the snack shack. Yes, it can rough at times but at we also have the most "real" umpires at the District level (95% of which simply started out as parents). "Coincidence? I think not!"

Good grief... I'd do a 16U game without gear before I'd do a 9/10U game without gear.  The younger the kids, the more I get beat up.

Heck! The only proper chest protector for 9/10U games is a balloon!
