Disgusting attack on youth ump (Video, not mine)

Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 1486 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

Check out the video here. I know there is a serious umpire shortage in youth ball, but it should be no mystery as to why. That ump appears to be a kid.

From where I'm sitting, the ump has the call correct. The only weird thing I'm seeing is the retired batter runner strolling across the infield between the pitcher and catcher during a live ball. What do you think?

The thing that really irks me about this is that nobody immediately hauled ass over there to get that coach the hell away from that kid. That coach should never set foot on a diamond ever again.

the crime is if this gets swept under the rug, or is this being "handled" by this organization that is bragging about themselves on twitter, irregardless of if the umpire files charges. inquiring minds want to know the, who was it, where was it, how was it, why was it, when was it and is this guy being dumped by the league like that Hoops Coach was in another youth group, or if this was just a parent, are they being banned. so let us know if the organization even acknowledges this incident being how great they are, and what actions they are taking concerning the incident and what actions are they taking to prevent this in the future from ever happening again. with being great comes great responsibility.

or as in another post on here in the past week, is the partner of this umpire taking the responsibility of handling it for his partner and then not doing anything just like in the other incident.

Just disgusting. Sad that the tweets are focusing on whether the runner was safe or out versus the assault and battery against a sports official and what looks like a minor.  Add in the fact that 20+ kids had to watch a coach assault the umpire and you wonder why we are having so many issues getting people to volunteer to officiate.

Get rid of these win at all cost adults who bring nothing to the game for children but a all or nothing mentality. I'm so tired of seeing these types of incidents.

Wow that is a horrible display for all those involved.

I hope that "coach" is banned from any sport for life along with getting charges pressed against him for assault and battery.

very glad the umpire "brushed it off" and did not elevate the issue further.  I know I have personally turned the other cheek a good handful of times when I wanted to say something back.  I cannot imagine being assaulted and than brushing it off and walking away.   But then thankfully I have never seen such an utterly poor display of sportsmanship, I pray I never have to.

Without question... Most fans, players and other coaches take their lead from the head coach.  If a head coach acts like a moron, the players and fans do as well.

This is beyond all of that.  This is a crime and should be treated as such. I would not have left the field until the police arrived and took him off in handcuffs, in front of the kids and fans. In Alabama we have actual laws specific to game officials.  This would be a felony in Alabama.

Completely agree with all said as any rational person would.

Not that it needs to be said, but add it on to reasons for dwindling umpire numbers. I'm 6'3 215 pounds (at least that's what my drivers license says ;) ). I don't doubt that influences how aggressive some coaches would get with me. I'm focused enough on doing a good job without worrying too much about my physical safety. I can imagine that may creep into the head of those smaller (not to mention female).

This is also a reason in do 95% of my games at my local LL. I know a lot of the board members and coaches either off the field or from repeatedly doing their games.

This is not a criticism of @Velho, it's a properly thought out rant.

I am 5' 10 ' 163lbs and can be full of piss and vinegar as the situation warrants. I couldn't possibly care less how big or intimidating a coach, parent, or player thinks they can be. I grew up with three brother and that taught me to stand up for myself and for what is right and I bear the scars to prove it.

If my partner finds themselves in a ugly situation and needs some assistance, I have never had any concern about sticking my beak in to restore order. An asshat is an asshat and needs to be told they are an asshat. Often that is accompanied by an all expenses paid trip to the parking lot.

The first time a tournament director does not support me to ensure the properly ejected remove themselves from sight and sound, I will exit the field and let come what comes. I think I am good enough that my services will find a place and if not, that's OK too. There is never a good reason for the behavior captured in this video to be tolerated and there is never a good reason for a supervisor to undermine their charges.
