This is the highlights unfortunately it does not show the hubub about the missed base.  The game coverage I am still looking for but from what I saw.

It appeared to me that the PU called him out not the 3BU for missing 3rd.   The only crappy replay from the 1st base side to me was not evident that he missed the base and they even went to review on it.

Anyone else see this call ?  or can find it onlne?

True - but you can hear the coach tell the new pitcher to do his warmups and then step off and appeal to third, and "we'll get that out"...you even hear an ump (I think) say "you're appealing?"  Funny hearing the announcers say "we'll explain everything when we get back" and then they edit that out too.   sheesh

ESPN app has the full game (i.e. not edited). @ArchAngel72 you're correct, it is PU who signals him out on the appeal. It then goes to replay and is upheld. They only show one replay angle and it's inconclusive. If he touched the bag it was with his left instep.

In the replay you can see a BU closely watching the touch. Since they knew it was going to be appealed (5+ minute delay between HR and appeal) maybe the crew conferenced, BU told PU it was a missed bag, and they had PU give the signal?

Wow  Yeah so To me from the video replay its completely inconclusive.   You must be right though that the 3BU got a good shot of it and it WAS a miss.

Just seemed really odd for PU to bang that out on the appeal.

To me "That is not the way"

It should have been the 3BU's call

Then a conference and replay..

Just seems a damned shame they did not cover that better with the cameras.

Edit:

It also seems REALLY SNEAKY  for ESPN to edit out the whole thing from that youtube video

Velho any chance you can link the game from the espn app some how?

Turns out I can. Looks like you need to log in with your cable provider. The HR in question is around 1 hour mark (it's the solo HR not the 3 run HR of back to back HRs).

Manchester, CT vs. Hooksett, NH (New England Regional Final)

Chances are that U2 went out to rule catch/no-catch or home run, etc.  When U2 goes, he stays out.

U3 cycles into the working area and takes runners and touches/plays at second.

PU rotates up the line to 3B to cover touches/plays at 3B.

U1 gets the BR touch at 1B and walks the line to make the calls at the plate if necessary.

The call was the PU's call to make, and he did!

I went back and watched it and looked at the rotation

Yeah U2 went out.  making me wonder where are the guys on the lines?  Maybe it was not a 6 man team.

U3 did move to the working area

SO with all that, that tells me no one had a really good look at the touch.  Well maybe U3 could see daylight between the cleat and the bag from the working area but I would think the angle would show him the inside of the shoe and block his view of the outside touching the bag.

I also wonder if the U3 "bird dogged" the miss which would have alerted the coach in the dugout more reason to ask for the appeal. From the dugout there should be NO way they see he missed it, based on angle and etc.

This conference call is really boring so adding some info for you :)

Maven are you mocking me or telling me I am wrong that the PU has all the calls with regards to touch appeals at bases?

Neither.

I know nothing about LL mechanics. In any standard mechanics with multiple umpires, it would be false to say that PU has all appeals.

Yeah it was a four man, 60' mechanics.  It was PU's responsibility and call.

The PU returned to his position to deal with the next batter; the defense then executed an appeal (although they had to be reminded that the ball needed to be in play.)  The PU ruled on the appeal from his position behind the plate.  But during the play he was there at 3B.

I have done this rotation a thousand times.  It's second nature to be up at 3B.

There are two factors at play here:

  1. Just because PU doesn’t physically rotate to close proximity of 3B, does not mean that he doesn’t have touch responsibility, nor that he didn’t observe a touch. There are plenty of situations or developing plays, even on full 90’ fields, wherein the PU would otherwise rotate to 3B… does not or chooses not to (thereby remaining at plate)… but still has touch of Runner of 3B. I’ve even had it in 3-man, with R1, and a fly ball to RF that U1 has to go out on. Either R1 gets a helluva jump (running on the pitch), or it turns out to be a HR… PU abandons the rotation, but still watches the touch of 3B by R1, even from the plate area. Granted, this is just an example, but this and other plays demonstrate that PU doesn’t have to be at 3B.
  2. It is likely that PU is acting or defacto UIC & CC, and that any appeals are administered through and by him, because a video review is sure to follow.
