They figure out what they really meant and then communicate that accordingly.

Fortunately,  I have never in my 3 yrs made that mistake. BUT  I was informed in school. It will happen to the best of us.  Hence why they tell us not to make the "bang bang" call.  to slow down.  see the call recheck the call in your head.  "Safe"  "he was safe correct" then  motion and call "Safe"  etc.

This happened to me and is something I need to work on.  I called "BALL"  but I started to stand and my right hand got as high as my shoulder as it shot up I pulled it in and called "BALL"  however that motion is confusing to anyone not hearing me.  99% of the time Im good locked in stayed down did not move head just barked "BALL" but on two close ones my hand moved cause it was close but I made the decision it was a ball but had already started to move.  bad on my part.. something I am working on..

But yeah it happens the Ump will clarify his gaf, most likely be pissed at him self as well as be embarrassed  and move on.

Same result as when the SWEET strike 2 pitch comes in and we do our fantastic STRIKE 3 call and mechanic.

Stop - realize your a dumb ass. Chuckle with the batter and catcher, signal strike 2 and move on...

You OP? Realize this is an error (obviously) and then ask for clarification as to the actual call.

Been there.....done that..........I signaled out..but called safe.....

Fortunately for me,  the runner was out by a large distance, so it was just an inadvertent verbal call..............fix it........be embarrassed........move on.....

Doing basketball years ago I once signaled a travel but verbalized a jump ball, which is the call I meant to make.

Another time I was doing a 6th grade game and one team was up 20 points with a few seconds left. The ball got loose and two players scrambled for it on the ground. I called a quick jump and then saw that it was two players on the same team.

It's more likely for these things to happen in basketball because the action is so fast and any call can come along at any time.

The dead rising from the grave!  Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!

Not saying this is a correct way to handle the situation but, there was a bang bang play that could have gone either way at 2nd base one time, and the umpire said safe verbally while raising his right arm high in air for the out call.

The 2 players involved looked at the umpire and said, well what is it. The umpire said, only you two guys heard me say safe, but you two guys and 50,000 other people in the stands saw me raise my right arm and hand with the visibly out sign. So, you are out.
