1. Call time right away
2. Call the play dead to prevent any movement by any baserunners

These are redundant, as in #1 accomplishes both.

“Time!” kills the ball (makes ball dead ☠️). Only one* other word kills the ball – “Foul”... which likely isn’t accurate in this case, and kinda boxes you into a corner (unless you definitely have the pitch hitting the bat first, and then hitting him, for example).

No other words kill the baseball... not “Dead Ball!” nor “Hit by Pitch!” nor “That Got Him!!”

————

*- In NFHS, it has been recently adopted that “Balk!” (immediately) kills the ball. Some manuals and associations advise (still) using, “Time! That’s a Balk!” or “Balk! Time!”, but it has become accepted and understood that “Balk!” alone kills the baseball in NFHS.

You haven't called much 8-10 LL then, have you?  Every parent will tell you their kid has a wicked nasty knuckle-curve with 8" of movement, but that's only to change it up from his 82mph fastball.

Actually, I have.  That's why I made the statement from experience.  I don't give a SH*# what the parents think.

Did I really need to add the wink?  😉

Is it just me, or has the frequency of “wear it! wear it! we’ve got ice!” deriding your own teammate for not getting blasted in the box really increased in the last 3-5 years? (Disclosure, speaking mostly of the wonderful world of summer travel ball.)

I'm hearing it enough to ask if we should do anything at an association meeting. So far the answer had been "no".

Here is the disturbing thing I have noticed since my return to the dirt in the last couple of months ... it is the MOMS yelling "wear it!" more often. 😆

@agdz59 ... why would we "do anything about it"?  The only thing you can do is know the rules of the code you are calling.  A kid who doesn't move doesn't get a base in some codes.  Know that, call that, enforce that.

Lol, I would agree. If Mrs. Robinson is cool with it, who am I to argue

That's exactly what I had in mind.

My experience cycle has come from my son's growth (now a HS Junior) vs umpiring (I only do LL) but I certainly see that culture. 10U and/or at the head/shoulders even - yikes.

But I will l say this years HS season it's all but disappeared for some reason. My son has even stopped (he was second coming of Don Baylor - even though he doesn't know who Don Baylor was). Big support once they get hit but less "wear it" on the near misses. We'll see what happens when we get back into travel.

One of the things I love about doing LL, when I hear the "wear it" from the parents now and again, I can say, just loud enough for me, the batter, and catcher: "Easy for them to say. That guy's throwing hard." Never fails to get a knowing nod and/or smile.

Side note: sthe withering stare my sons 16U teammates shot the stands when we said it (me too, mindlessly contributing it) shook me awake.

no.  But then again, did i really need to add that I don't give a sh*# what parents think?   I gotcha. Point made.

Really??  I'm not sure where you are, but here in the South Texas area, "wear it!" is like a damn battle cry in a HS game on the close miss pitches.

I'm in San Jose. Not sure why but it hasn't been that pronounced. Surprises me as well.

For my son specifically, I think getting tossed over one in JV 2 years ago may have calmed him down about them (that and OBP apparently not mattering in getting ABs/playing time vs glitzy hits (or DNA, lol).
