I understand the folks who think this might be bad form to post a pic of a brother on this site. But, I still appreciate the commentary. As someone who is still learning, I like to know what is and isn't kosher. I cannot ask most folks in my association, because, well, just because.

I am lucky to have a mentor who started me off right, and was patient with me when I looked way worse than this guy.

I only learned last October that sleeves under a shirt was a no no. Is there a manual that spells all of this stuff out? I have not seen it. This forum is all I know of.

Maybe blur out the face next time, but otherwise a productive thread.

I didn't see it as a plate meeting -- there's too many players around and it appears too close to the dugout. I thought it was the umpire talking to the coach before the game begins, possibly getting some wonky ground rules out of the way before the plate meeting.

Aside from that, I myself wear glasses when I work, and they are Transitions lenses. On a sunny day, mine probably look just like the ones this guy was wearing.

And - for what it's worth - I agree this is a useful thread, but blurring out the guy's face would have been a considerate thing to do. Honestly, he doesn't look that bad. There was a time (as has been previously posted) when most of us looked much worse than this guy.

I never looked that bad! Just kidding. Heck when I stated umpiring last year I wore my hat backwards, long sleeves under my shirt, watch, and had the closed fist for a full count.

This is how we did it over 20 years ago when I umpired and I didn't get any training when I got thrown on the field last year.

Personally, I thought you looked a lot more "professional" in the second pic!

Also, your "stance" looks a little "over-angled". Maybe it's just the perspective of the camera angle, maybe not.

Try starting with your legs/feet a little more "square" to the plate/pitcher, and see if you like it.

(Yeah, I know why. I set up slightly "angled" as well, but not to the same degree you appear to be.)

All around, looks good. Good head height, head IS "square":, and solid foundation.

Though it's hard to tell for sure with the foreshortening effect of the long lens, it would also appear that your "slot alignment" is "spot on".

The way you are wearing your throat guard will inhibit it's proper function.

It's not called a "dangler" for nothin', you know. Think about it.

And, if you're going to wear a sucker THAT big, you might as well get the "value" for the weight.

It was my first game of the year. Earlier in the day, I cleaned them with Scrubbing Bubbles and sprayed with hair spray. Best tip I ever got. I do it at home before packing the shoes for the game.

Well, since you can't see the mask in the back of his pants, ...how can you comment on it, right? So, ...based on what I can see....ok, he's got a number on his sleeve, and the association doesn't have numbers,...no biggie really. The watch, and the gel-bracelt, (in orange) yuk, if it were black , it probably wouldn't be a big deal. He looks fairly neat and tidy, ...if his shoes are clean, ....so what really, aside from the watch and orange bracelet.

Some days I would pray for a partner to look like that!:rolleyes:

No watch...as far as the bracelet, maybe drop the orange one but I wear a Phiten black bracelet on the field and I have also worn a single ball bag for over 10 years. IMHO, there is no reason to pick on this guy. He probually just needs to attend a weekend clinic so he can be educated on proper attire. Instead of bashing our fellow umpire lets find a way to educate them. For example, if you saw this guy getting dressed in the parking lot and he was exposing himself to the public what product would you recommend to him?

If a lefty is only going to wear one bag then certainly it goes on the left.

I'm a lefty and I wear my bag on my right, my left hand holds my indicator and usually my mask, so I've reasoned its just easier to use the free hand. I've just learned how to lob a ball to the mound with my right hand or hand it to the catcher.

I may be picking flysh*t out of pepper, but, I am a stickler on facial hair.

Now, before you all lambaste me ( ), my background is primarily a conservative one. I work in public accounting and I have, in the past, officiated college hockey. In both these endeavors, at most (at least in hockey officiating), a moustache is acceptable only if it is neatly trimmed (read no goatees or beards). Having said that, I prefer to be clean shaven. I know a lot of umpires wear moustaches and some even wear beards. For me, it's a personal preference...as it is for everyone. However, I believe it's a more professional look and appearance.

No flogging, in higher levels of umpiring facial hair can be a no no, although some MLB umpires have broken that barrier to an extent. I personally wear a full beard and have for the last 12 years. I have worn a winter beard since HS but always shaved it off in spring. I no longer shave it off, but perfectly understand your feelings.

I think facial hair is fine (I have a goatee BTW) just as long as it is neatly groomed/trimmed it is fine.

had a moustache for years....but when it was quietly intimated to me that facial hair for higher levels was not looked upon favorably I shaved it off.....nowadays that does not seem to be an issue......and for me, I could care less....

As I say, I wear a full beard but didn't for years during baseball. Now my moustache I have worn since tenth grade. I have work up into D1 with no problem.
