I know it's a live ball but do you "yell it out" when it happens or wait until all the action is done and then announce it?

Thanks

"That's INT" (or, in FED, OBS) while pointing down at the catcher.  Hold the signal a while because participants aren't used to looking at the PU when the ball is batted -- give them a second or two to see that you have "something" and that you had it right away so they don't complain about the "late call" later.

OK... thanks.

They probably aren't going to hear you because of all the commotion due to the hit so are you doing it in a "normal" voice or in your "selling the call" voice.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

If we use a normal voice, the DC will complain that we didn't call it right away.

If we use a loud voice, chances are that everyone will stop, and then the OC will complain that we've undercut his chance to take the play (esp. if an R2 or R3 might have scored).

I recommend a normal voice.

FWIW,

I point immediately at the catcher, I speak, "That's INTERFERENCE" in a normal voice, and I do not drop my pointing arm until the play is over.

I'll risk the DC being upset over the OC coach being upset any day since the Defense made the infraction.

Someone of the nine players and three coaches is going to notice me pointing for several seconds.

Yelling is a BAD idea for the obvious reason that anything loud "feels" like I'm killing the play.

And no ... when doing a FED game, I don't say, "THAT'S OBSTRUCTION."

Alabama umpires get dinged for calling this interference in FED games...

I will never understand this... White on the shoes makes them look cleaner in my opinion

Some guys in Alabama applied the 'little bit of white' in the uniform code very liberally and got called on it.

Ah men,

I have a question.

In FED that is catcher's obstruction not interference. May I suggest that in FED that yelling 'That's Obstruction!" or "that's Catcher's Obstruction" is the better way to sell the play?

Yes, I know OBR defines it as Catcher's INF. However, many times we are not dealing with College, professional or adult players who know what Catcher's Interference is.

Point and say that's something. Don't yell. If you yell all play will stop while you have a live ball sitting somewhere on the field. What something you call it doesn't matter except to some previous posters authorities who are anal about it.

Ah,

With all due respect I disagree. If everyone stops who gains an advantage on the play? If you do not communicate so that everyone on the field and in both dugouts do not hear what you are calling, then you add confusion to the play, making everything worse.

You still have a play going on, and if you do not make it clear you have OBS, INF, whatever, you are giving the defense the advantage when it was their error. If you yell and both sides stop playing you can let it go until the play ends then make the award.

If you have ten guys watching a game with duct tape over their mouths and the dugouts 15 feet from the plate, just saying something might be fine. Use your voice and sell it.

If they dont hear you the play will be the most accurate result of what would happen and then you can use the rule to adjudicate the result. If you yell, IMHO, at most FED levels you will stop play and have a goat rope to deal with. What advantage would the defense gain or the offense lose by not knowing that you called CI? BUT the call should be made. Just not yelled.

Not 1 in 100 will know the difference between CI and CO.

Yes, in a FED game you *should* use the proper terminology.  It won't matter to the play (or penalty) at all if you don't.

Almost everyone at the HS level where I am know what catchers INT is, and I have had a few coaches ask why I called it catchers OBS in their game.

They know what it is without question. They just don't know how to properly enforce the nuances of it. They only know 'batter gets 1B'.

And don't yell it. Just point and say it the same way you would call an OBS on the bases, a coach's INT, or a batter INT. Point, say it with authority (conviction-not yelling), and rule/manage accordingly.
