How come the solution to a problem many times becomes more convoluted than the original problem. I hope I am not excluded to this discussion as I am governed by a whole different set of rules (Baseball Canada and provincial minor baseball association), but our minor baseball "slide or avoid" rule states the runner must "slide or attempt to avoid a collision."

I know that this may not be the same as the rule set for all of you (not you all ;) ) but it still has the same frustrating outcomes for umpires. Nothing frustrates me more than a coach yelling, "he's out; he didn't slide." I am, like all of you, wondering what that avoid part means. Part of me reads it as an intentional collision by the runner. Also, I am wondering if intentional/unintentional factor is weighing into the confusion of when to call it or let it go.
