Ump-attire now has the base version of the field magistrates in stock. Another big white logo, but I don't think I am really that opposed to having white on my shoes. I think if you keep the white clean and the black clean, you still maintain a professional image on the field. I have a pair of the older Reebok base shoes in all black and they are probably one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes I own. I even find myself wearing them more than NBs. What do you all think of these?

If you like the reebok shoe, but don't like all the white, there is an alternative. The Reebok Thorpe II is the same shoe with the same sole. The stripes are mostly black with a white outline. They have an NFL logo on the tongue, but big deal. I got a pair for football and loved them, so I am going to use them for base shoes as well. There's a pic here:

Supposedly about like the NB, just not as shining. My problem is I was taught to not look like a player and the Reeboks look like a player's cleats.

Umpires are athletes too! Why can't we wear athletic shoes? IMO every piece of equipment we strap on sets us apart from the players. The Rbk plate shoes were designed by umpires and they have white on them. The umpires who wear them are not being paid to do so, so I guess the white doesn't bother them.

I wanted to offer a different perspective of the shoes... a pic of the Reebok shoes worn (actually these are plates, not base). The point of providing the pic is showing that there's not as much white visible when wearing the pants.

Welcome Eagle!

I like that look much better. I wonder if it will will ever be available for the plate shoe?

The white is something I think we as umpires may have to get use to. It started, I believe, with the +POS a few years back and has grown. Some umpires' associations have amended their appearance guidelines away from all black plate shoes. I think it's just the way things are going similar to the heather gray slacks being replaced by the charcoal gray.

I hope so, I do like the more athletic appeearance of the shoes with a bit of white on them...I wear the mizuno shoe...........the only problem for me is that PIAA only allows all black for HS games.....so I have mulitple shoes........and as far as the white on my plate shoes...I have always used +POS shoes and I never cared about that little white logo showing a bit and have never been dinged for wearing them....

I see nothing wrong with a small white emblem to show who's shoe it is. I object to covering half the shoe with stripes for no reason other than fashion. We can wear athletic shoes that are mostly or all black. I would like to be able to either clean or polish my shoes without q-tips or other tools to try and get in between a bunch of useless lines. My objections are partly old school, partly expediency and finally a fashion objection.

I still cringe when I see this picture, but...

all three umpires are wearing Rbks with white on them, and they look cean and professional. I have the same shoes as the umpire on the left except in all black, Kerwin is wearing the field magistrate plates, and the umpire on the right is wearing the field magistrate base shoes. I think you could still polish them very easily with some of the stuff I got in a goody bag at LL Western Region School. It comes in a rectangular plastic box and has a sponge with clear polish pre applied. One simply ruds the sponge over the entire shoe, and because it is clear, the black stays black and the white stays white. It gives a great shine to my shoes.

Try living in LA and having people ask me if thats ever happened to me. Im actually that doesnt happen more with Russell Martin (the dodger all star catcher). He has a tendancy to lose concentration and miss the ball. I dont think its intentional but still it worries me.

I have looked at the Reeboks that are all black and liked what I saw... I just wish they came in a size I could wear. (size 11 EE)

Well, y'all better get used to seeing them, 'cause they're now the official shoes of MLB umpires.

It wouldn't surprise me to see reebok make a big splash in all phases of protective gear as well, and become the official supplier of MLB. They have done it already in the NFL and NHL, and I saw a White Sox catcher decked out head to toe this past weekend. I'm sure umpire gear isn't too far behind.

Agreed.

more options, more research and more umpire only developed products are good for us.....I certainly remember when I started that umpire gear choices were either very limited or you cobbled together a mixture of umpire and catchers gear.....

I would love to see Reebok collaborate with MLB and MiLB umpires to create plate gear that competes with Wilson. Wilson has somewhat of a monopoly on hard shell CP's...Ridell quit making the Power, and at least in the mean time Douglas is not making gear. I have nothing against Wilson, or paying top dollar for protection, but a little competition would and a few more options wouldn't hurt.

Jordan,

Some good comments, but the reason that you don't see any competition on hard shell chest protectors is because MLB umpire Joe West has a patent on those that is so broad that it's very difficult to make any hard shell that doesn't infringe on that.

Reebok is doing more on the players side the last few years (catchers equipment and bats), so there is a possibility they could move into umpire gear. I would guess that it would be a remote possibility, but suppliers don't often do the most logical things... so it's hard to predict what they might do.

i have a pair of these shoes and cleaning them is easy, and the white part hardly gets dirty. I have cleaned them about 10 times and its still as white as the day i bought them
