LAD-SD Neighborhood Play: Day 2

Here is Day 2 of the neighborhood play at Petco Park. This one is not reviewable as U2 ruled R2 out on F6's putout. R1 Utley (yesterday's F4) may or may not have interfered with F6 (ruled no interference on the field). So many potential outcomes here.

That video makes a good case for keeping the neighborhood play in baseball (and I don't think a bad throw took him off the base...a bad throw would nullify a neighborhood play argument). The reason for the neighborhood play is to give the middle infielders a chance to get away from hard sliding R1s. Even with taking advantage of neighborhood play, R1 still got a piece (illegally I believe) of F6 and it probably would have been worse if F6 didn't neighborhood play it.

If the neighborhood plays is prohibited then they must prohibit R1 from going after F4/6 (like they did for F2).

You need more than just the blatant interference called to solve the problem (if there is a problem...which I don't think there is). If you're going to do away with the neighborhood play, you need to give F4/6 a protected zone like Fed does or else F4/6 are sitting ducks near the base. All slides would need to be in-line with the base.

We do this to protect young players, but I don't think there is an appetite to do this in pro-ball. Just leave the neighborhood play alone...non-problem solved.

Agree about the interference, but what struck me was the respect and deference they showed to Barrett.
