High school is dumb. Whenever I mention my older brother, all the blood drains out of their faces. So as I stand here outside health with the most disorganized schedule ever created in my hands, I beg of you all to offer me advice on how to not fling my books out a window and run screaming through the halls.

"Older brother" ? Do I read this as you have a legacy already laid down before you?

Simple. You learn as much as you can, as quickly as you can and thoroughly as you can, and live the way you want to (within reason, and within the guidelines of your _parents_). If someone already typecasts you as "just like your brother" or "just another Keep" (if Keep was your last name), reply with "I'm not _that_ Keep, nor anything like him.", and then go and prove that. That proof won't happen instantly... you've got months to show that.

I had to endure the expectations of being a son of one of the more well-known teachers at the high school. Every teacher was gunnin' for me (any slip-ups or shenanigans got reported within minutes), and every fellow student either viewed me as a know-it-all or as a killjoy.

You're not expected to have a plan. You're expected to be a student, and to learn, and to formulate _ideas_. If your schedule sucks, then get it altered. Find something that not only challenges you but also you can see yourself succeeding at. Heck, you're a movie clip junkie... Is there a Media Arts / journalism / media production class you can take? Perhaps one you can ask the teacher of about how to become more involved in it?

I am sure that many others are going through the same thing. One of them things you just have to suck it up and do your best. #NoExcuses!

Because they get annoyed at you...and then you don't get your classes...

So you gonna give up?  Don't

I'm a proud dad of two recent college graduates. Both graduated with honors. My best advice to them was do what you have to do in order to be able to do what you want to do. Woody Allen said; half of life is showing up.

Tip for high school, coming from a current HS senior(myself) 1. Work hard, don't slack off and fall behind!!!! That leads to failures which is not good, I should know I'm in Algebra 2 for my third time(Junior year, Summer School, now senior year). 2. Your Counselor is your best friend, Get to know them it pays off, I regularly chat with mine, even if its not about school. Mine is a HUGE Yankees fan so we talk alot of baseball. 3. Building off that last part TEACHERS ARE PEOPLE TOO! Seriously I got very lucky and 80% of teachers I have had love baseball, so I really got to know them by talking about that, try to befriend teachers like anyone else they're good friends to make. 4. Don't socialize in the halls between classes, if a teacher sees you moving full speed(no running) towards their classroom and you're late you might catch a break for ATTEMPTING to be on time. 5. Ask Juniors and Sophomores for directions, Seniors tend to trick Freshman for fun. 6. Don't mess up calls when your teacher's kid's team is playing. Mostly kidding but I rung up my Holocaust Studies Teacher's son on a close pitch and I got alot of joking about it from her. Again that last one isn't serious.

It is really refreshing to hear the teachers refusing to bullSH*# me with the "you just have to apply yourself" shtick. My algebra teacher told me straight up he didn't think I was going to pass the class without getting treated for my insomnia (1st period math-who's idea was THAT?!) and signing up for in-school tutoring (which is expensive as HELL) because it was simply above my pace.

Also all of my teachers have told me that they lose assignments, which is really refreshing as well. It's nice to see that the teachers see everybody in the school as adults and realize that every adult screws up, including them.

Feels weird getting to ditch the daily power struggles. BUT I'm still the best in biology. Easy A and I get to help the attractive Latin boy next to me.

And I've already left my old crew and found two more Doc Marten-wearing, jean-shredding, social-justice-fanatic, hair-dying, blowing-ears-out-at-lunch-much-to-the-annoyance-of-the-vice-principal pop punkers. :rock

I'm on the lead production crew for the school news program and come March I'll be the host for baseball news. I'm on the Drama/Debate/Forensics team (something you'll all say "oh you'll do great in that"; I'm only doing forensics.) I'm also trying for the first-ever Freshman captain position on the second string National Ocean Sciences Bowl team. Low brass in concert band and the only freshy in the Pit Band. (I'll be playing for "Mary Poppins.") Stage crew for "Pride and Prejudice." Still wondering if Juneau Youth Court is worth my time or not.

Wow! that's quite a load of extracurricular activities. They say if you need a job done give it to a busy person. Tear it up and leave that kid in Biology alone.

Band and video are actually classes. NASO is on Mondays, DDF is on Wednesday, I have mandatory study hall all other days.

And I will not. He sucks at biology.
