Not sure why Peavy is arguing ...he MUST know what he did!

Posted

Peavy is arguing because that's awfully tight.

But that's balk-a-day Bob for you.

OK rooks, what's the infraction, with OBR citation?

Not yet, I haven't said that.

Now I'll say it: I wouldn't call that in a varsity game. ;)

Nor would I.  Notice that Bob was the sole voice in the crowd on that call...

In the shot from the outfield, watch his throwing hand as he starts to come set.

Watch VERY closely.

Guys remember some pro interps just don't work at our level.

I saw it, but would never call it.

Why they call these, yet let Pettite balk to first his entire career is beyond me.

Exactly!

IMHO it has been clandestinely hinted at all levels that balks should not be called as often as in the past when we had "little ball". There is absolutely no way in the skeem of things, in how the powers that be at all levels want balks handled appropriately in their eyes, that the guy who likes to steal bases has a chance anymore, with the things that have become acceptable for the pitchers to do, even though the wording has remained the same, the interpretations of those rules has moved in another direction.

Billy Ball versus Little Ball, and Billy Ball has won, at least for now, 250lbs guy who can't bend over (just hope for a lucky bounce into your glove), 2.50 batting average gap hitters are in for now. Pretty soon, going to a MLB game will be like going to a Super Slow Pitch softball game. Guess that really makes baseball purists happy when games are 4 hours and 12-10 affairs with 9 pitchers throwing so their ERA stays down. All the old records are going to be safe for a very long time now. Rickey Henderson does not have to worry one iota of his stolen base records ever being broken. At 2.50, nobody will ever catch Pete Rose in hits, or much anything else. Guess those double records may be broken. Doesn't look like many HR's are actually happening right now anyway, so they better move the fences in for those power guys.

Why would anyone even want to attempt a stolen base, when the only agreed upon balk is the one where the pitcher drops the ball to the ground out of his glove while standing on the rubber on the mound. Heck, fast guys aren't needed anymore anyway.

Death of little ball.

OK - I get that this might be to ticky tacky to call at a lower level.  To help my game management skills, what do I say to the OHC that sees the start/stop and wants the balk called?

Thanks for the help.

"Coach, in my judgement, his delivery was one continuous motion." Or something similar.

Too long.

"Coach, he's OK." If he butts in again, "Coach, I saw it, he's OK, that's enough now!"

It's a judgment call. If he asks nicely between innings, I might give him more.
