I have really been wanting to get away from using the phone for this, and I finally purchased a countdown timer a few weeks ago. I purchased the Robic SC-512 from Bodytronics for $12.95 and free shipping. http://www.bodytronics.com/p/timers/RO512?utm_source=Shopzilla&utm_medium=CPC&utm_campaign=Shopzilla

I have really enjoyed using this the last 5 games. This model has the regular beep alert and a silent mode as well. It also can recall the last time you entered, which is great since the games have the same time limit.

Bought a watch with a countdown timer at WalMart. 19 bucks. When it goes beep beep beep, we're done.

As long as you are putting it in your ball bag and not wearing it on your wrist.  :fuel:

I have a timex analog watch that I bought for $9 (or something like that) more than 30 years ago.  Took off the band and just carry the watch.  I have had to replace the battery a few times, though.

I use a timex watch to keep time. I use the countdown function so it beeps when time is up. I simply loop the band thru a belt loop and it's always in reach and not on my wrist.

My iPhone has a very nice countdown timer

I usually have the company phone on me, Blackberry, don't laugh. No. 1 reason I bought the timer.

Is there something wrong with wearing a watch in your association?  Never seen anyone get dinged around here for wearing a watch in games that have a time limit.

@BillKen - watch isn't part of the uniform and goes against most umpire manuals.

I just use an old Casio digital watch that I keep either in an interior pocket in my ball bag or in my back pocket. It's got a timer so if need be I set that, otherwise it's just a watch.

@BillKen when I first got into our association i was shocked at how many guys wear watches. Was always frowned upon in other groups I have called in.

iPod nano is a nice option too. It's small and has the option of a countdown timer or a bold digital clock phase.

I bought a timer from walmart or target for $8-10. Clips on fence, start it as soon as plate meeting is over, coaches can walk by and look at time left without asking me how much time left. When they ask what was game time, tell them game time is counting down on timer. Had playoff game last night, last out in bottom of 5th was made, timer went off two seconds later as team was running off field, ballgame coach. Showed him the timer was out of time and nothing he could say.

Shouldn't the next inning be played?  (I guess it depends on the specific timing rules you use -- I was assuming "no new inning...." and the inning started as soon as the third out was made)

VT was down by 3-4 runs, their last outfielder had not even got off the field when the timer went off. So I went ahead and called ball game. I have had to start a new inning with 20 seconds left before and it ended up being 20 minutes over game time for one inning. I went ahead and killed that one last night when I had the chance.

In most places that I am familiar with that is not the criteria.

It's the out relative to the timer.  The 20-minute game you had before could leave you cursing the fates, but you shouldn't have ended the game.
