Question about MLB rules:

I thought about this little conundrum after a 2013 game in which a pitcher was substituted before he faced one batter ( Rule 3.05 (b) says that a pitcher must face at least one hitter before he can come out of the game, unless he's injured.  The pitcher in the game was not injured, so taking him out before facing a batter was a violation of the rule.

BUT

what if Bo Porter (the manager who made the illegal switch), simply went back to the mound a second time?  Bruce Bochy caught Don Mattingly a few years back trying to make a second trip to the mound to the same pitcher in the same inning, requiring Mattingly to change pitchers on the spot (

So if I'm a manager, I bring in a new pitcher, see that the opposing manager is putting in a pinch hitter, and decide that I want ANOTHER new pitcher.  The rules state that I cannot take him out yet, since he's not hurt, and he hasn't faced a batter, so instead, I circumvent the rule, leave the mound, and immediately get right back on.  Do I have to change the pitcher, or can I not change the pitcher?

You might try reading 4.15(e )

4.15e is going to get an umpire in trouble more than it helps. Forfeits, in practice, are only done by the overall authority, and not umpires, with one general exception: If there is an objective standard which if met, the penalty is forfeit, and if the authority is granted to the umpire, he can forfeit (e.g. having less than nine available players in NCAA.)

Do not forfeit on subjective criteria. Suspend and refer.

I am a Giants fan since 66'. This was a great pitching matchup between Lincecum and Kershaw during the Giants World championship year. I watched every pitch of the a Giants season. It's a great way to learn. Adrian, a rookie umpire did warn Don Mattingly to not return to the mound. Don had already left the dirt portion of the mound to return to the Dodger dugout. That fact is key

Andre Ethier asked Manager Mattingly a question as he was walking back to the dugout

He turned and started back toward the mound and that's when Adrian verbally warned him

Don did not hear him and continued up onto the dirt portion of the mound area to answer Ethier's question. Short talk and back to the dugout. Adrian got behind the plate and was ready to put the ball play. Bochy jumped up and ran to home plate to protest. Adrian looked annoyed. He brought the crew together. Mattingly was ejected

Tim McClelland motioned for the Dodgers reliever to come in immediately. When the Dodger reliever took another warm up pitch Tim became agitated and motioned for the reliever to come in immediately. He did. Gave up a game losing hit. Giants win.
