Anyone have any experience with powder coating magnesium? I love my champro, but the paint started coming off of the day I got it 3 years ago. I have painted every year since and all it does is rub off...

I sent mine to mask-it. It exploded after they heated it. Not sure what caused it.

Science caused it to explode. Magnesium and extreme heat aren't best buddies.

I agree with the above except powder coating is usually cured at about 400 deg F for a few minutes. They may have used a torch or a chemical stripper that reacted with the magnesium.

I emailed Tony @mask-it and he indicated that heat and mag don't mix. Basically said buy a new "metal" mask. I am going to see if I can do something locally.

I emailed Tony @mask-it and he indicated that heat and mag don't mix. Basically said buy a new "metal" mask. I am going to see if I can do something locally.

You might want to look in electrostatic painting as an option. It is a different process but gives a very durable finish similar to powder coating. Good luck

Has anyone used Green Gridiron? There as a recommendation on either this thread or the Mask Porn thread for them. I emailed them and they respomded that to do the mask would be $30 including shipping. This would make it at least $10 less then MaskIt.

I sent my Dynalite mask to a friend who operates a machine shop. He has media blasted the coating off. Last night he brought the "naked" mask to me and pointed out an area that he wanted to grind down and a weld he thought could be more secure. I told him to go for it. He'd going to do that and then powdercoat it for me along with the clips from my CP which are rusting. I'll post pics when I get it back.

I saw a champro-plus magnesium in the store the other day and could not believe how light it was. My only issue, I can't stand the masks with the extension on the top. Could this potentially be taken off when it's powder coated or would that compromise some of the protection the mask offers?

@Lala - It is not an integral part of the frame. Zero structural integrity loss.

@Umpire in Chief - Every frame I've stripped has had areas that needed attention. I weld/reweld every single one before I coat it. IMO, this is the very most important part of the refurb. A thorough inspection of the bare metal components and joints.
