Hey Y'all,

I noticed that most MLB and quite a few Milb umpires are NOT crowning their caps across the eyelets in the front panels anymore. Is this now the new standard? As umpires, I prefer the crowned look. Makes the caps look sharp.

Thanks,

I crease mine really hard in the front. It gives it a very sharp look, puts the logo or association letters more upright/upfront drawing focus to it, and it simply is just the way umpires wear their hats. I've noticed some don't, and either way, you're still wearing a hat.

I don't crease the backs, but when they're stored and kind of folded up, I just let them crease on their own, however it looks. The more wear out of the hat, the more the edges can crease more/better. Just my two cents. IMO, I like the creased look. I never did, then I tried it with a hat, and now all of mine are like that.

WHATEVER YOU DO, JUST DON'T WEAR A HAT BACKWARDS!!!  :smachhead:

I don't use steam, I'll admit.  But my caps always have a sharp crease.  I spray the caps with water to dampen them, work to get the creases in, and then they're stored in a cap caddy using 3 paper clips across the top, loosened just a bit so the clips don't put marks in the hats.

I was working a tourney with some people I didn't know earlier this year and one of the assignors saw the creases and said to me, later, "You just look like an umpire."  And that's the point.

I used to think the creased look was just stupid looking then I tried it and I'm never going back. It just feels like it fits better and looks better. I alway crease the front of mine right at the very back of the eyelets so that the eyelet is part of the crease. For all of my wool hats I crease the back as well but I've found that doesn't work too well with mesh caps which are almost a necessity here in Texas in the middle of the summer when i'm doing 5-6 games a day. I have used the iron method but I don't find it to work as well for me as a hair straightener does with a damp wash cloth to steam in the creases.
