I'd never smell another tournament game if I called that in a HS game. That's the tiniest of nits to pick.
do you make your calls because they are right or because you want to get the tournament ? Are you aware that the "right call" changes as you move up?

What is higher than MLB  ???

The question was personal and directed to me, and I don't work MLB.

One has to be careful not to judge the batter-runner's "intent" and pay attention to the "attempt". Did the batter-runner make ANY movement or motion consistent with attempting to go to second? if you look at the last part of the video, starting at about 1:15, the batter runner makes a movement associated with rounding the bag or going to second. I have an attempt here. Is the movement slight......yes...but how vigorous or aggressive of a movement is irrelevant in determining an attempt. I see no reason to call this differently at any level from T-Ball to MiLB AAA. As far as Laz's call, this is certainly one of those "the other end of the stick" type of calls, however the rules do support his decision. Besides, I’ve never known of a big league guy afraid to burn down a dugout because of a call he just made…..but at the levels you work.....Y.M.M.V.

OMFG, no way is that an attempt, come on.  Diaz missed this one.

Then maybe you should offer to give him some remedial training!

Seriously? The guy started to round the bag because he thought the ball was going to CF. When he realized F6 made a "damn good recovery"  he tried to play it off. This wasn't even a hard call to make in a 4 man crew, it was his only responsibility at the time.

I've called it before and I'm sure I'll end up calling again. If the kids makes a move, jukes towards, or steps towards second off the bag and a kid tags I have no problem with the call.

I'd also have no problem explaining it to the coach and potentially tossing him if need be.

It's a rule. Not nitpicking to make a call like this.

Those of you saying he didn't make an attempt must be talking about a different play!!!

Just took another look at it. As another poster mentioned, Alvarez thought the ball might get by and was ready just in case. There are only a few possibilities for choosing not to make this call: A) you don't understand the rule B)you understand the rule but are selectively choosing not to apply it or C) you're just not a very good umpire.

I'm sure most of you guys are better than this.

I think that those who say "No attempt" are only looking at what he did AFTER touching first-base.  If you look at how he approached first-base in conjunction with his first step after first-base then I see an attempt toward second-base.

I called a similar play in a 13-14u pony game. BR reached first and ran past it on a single. As he ran up the baseline past first, he made a very slight juke towards 2nd and then started walked back to first. Defense applied a tag, and I called him out. Even the first base coach agreed he made a move towards 2nd. If I got by calling that in a 13-14u game, I think Diaz is justified calling this... especially at the MLB level, no less. Diaz did the job of an umpire here.... calling it objectively by the letter of the law.

What's also funny is that on UEFL, most people agreed with the call. Amazing how 2 umpire sites can differ so greatly on one play...

You have to make "an attempt."  Just because you turn one way or the other is meaningless.  There is no way in hell that guy made "an attempt" to go to second.

So did you not see his "rounding" and his left foot jab towards 2B....he made an attempt and realzied it would have been a bad play. He then got lazy and tried to walk back to the bag, was tagged by F3 and got his coach EJ.  It is the highest level of baseball, he clearly knew what he did, quit fishing for an excuse you sound like Fans and not umpires.

And 99% of people on here agree with me, but everyone has the right to an opinion, including Diaz who kicked the SH*# out of this one.

I know I'm in the minority, but the fact that he seems to start rounding prior to the base makes it an attempt to me.  I think he though it might get thru.

I know this thread has mostly run its course, but I wanted to address this specific point.  A runner cannot make an attempt to second before he reaches first.  What he does prior to touching first base is irrelevant.  The attempt, or lack thereof, should be judged solely on what he does after touching first.

7.08 (j) He fails to return at once to first base after overrunning or oversliding that base.  If he attempts to run to second he is out when tagged. (my emphasis).

I agree we all have an opinion. I'm not sure it's 99% though :)

99% of people (based on your calculation) who made their opinion know within this thread are wrong. Pretty simple.
