Missed the call at second and great call at the plate. But it did look like the fielder was trying to pull the ball out of his glove when he was trying to keep from busting his ass.

1. Ball came out after the runner was out on the force play. Had it popped out like that during a tag play, I'd say he was safe.

2. It's pretty tight, no complaints about the call. But I don't want to have to make that call from that spot. :(

Clearly an out at the plate.  Not even questionable.  Bad call.

The play at 2nd is interesting and not unlike the "voluntary release" thread from a few weeks back.  Runner's foot knocked the ball out, not sure how that can be considered control unless there is some kind of interference ruling, which this clearly was not.

Looks like two blown calls on the same play.

I have an out at second and if the tag was actually made at the plate an out there, although it appears to me he might have just missed him and tried to sell a tag.

I agree that it looks like safe at second, looks like a missed tag at home.

I've noticed this a lot in the Majors in regard to the tag at 2nd.  It seems like the way the MLB Umpires interpret a tag as just "secure and complete" possesion of the ball, no voluntary release needed like a catch.  For example:

1) He was called out at second because he tagged 2nd with secure and complete possesion of the ball and then seperately a slide knocks it out.

2) Alfonso Marquez called out a runner at second (Giants and Rays Game) because the ball was GLOVED from a throw tagging second base for the a double play.  He had secure and complete possesion of the ball, then the contact with the ground caused the ball to come out.

3) 2003 Playoffs between Boston and Oakland...U3 Wilke calls runner going back to 3rd out when he is tagged. The momentum of the fielder causes him to fall to the ground immediately after the tag and the ball pops loose, still out!

In all of these plays, they do not follow the definition of a catch which requires voluntary release and mantaining control of the ball during contact with the ground. I think he got the call right at second because the tag had secure and complete possesion.
