Was speaking with a buddy of mine who had a team in cooperstown last week or so, seems catcher missed a pitch from what I was told it seems the plate umpire struck the catcher was of course escorted out and meet by PD what happened from there unknown. Guess the umpire meeting saturday will get longer, hopefully it is not as bad as it sounds.

maybe I shouldn't be saying this but at the rate CDP goes through umps (about 1000 every summer) I doubt they do serious background checks

It's an interesting proposition.  The math would likely support your opinion:

At CDP, there are 415 games on the week.

Let's assume that all games prior to Thursday are 2 man.  That's 400 of the games.

Let's assume the Thursday games are 4 man.  There are 15 games on Thursday.

Let's assume the pay rate is $50 each for 2 man, and $40 each for 4 man.

That's $42,400 for the week, divided by 104 teams, divided by 12 players per team.

Total additional cost to pay umpires would be $34 per player for the week.  Seems doable, and probably less than most teams pay to bring their own umpire anyway.  Sucks for those of us that get to travel there and immerse ourselves in baseball and umpiring for a week, but it probably wouldn't be noticed all that much by the players, coaches and fans.

Friend of mine was there (at CDP) when it happened.  According to him this guy had a lot of exeprience. DI college etc.  Reportedly the catcher missed it on purpose and one punch was thrown.  Ump was taken to the entrance of the park and left ther with all his stuff.  No mention if the PD were involved though I suspect they were.

That's the version I got.

I just got back from CDP (Week 5) and I heard two different stories... One was the one stl_ump mentioned, and that the police were waiting for the guy at his house.

The other story I heard was that this was an accidental miss that caught the PU... He went out in front of the plate to brush off the plate and give himself some time, and when he finished, he gave the catcher a little smack on the CP as a "Come on dude, gotta get those", not at all malicious. The catcher was caught off balance and fell, coaches and parents saw what looked like the worst, and they kicked him out more to appease the outrage than as a penalty for his actions.

I'd like to believe the second one, but who knows.

Didn't consider that possibility. How mant times do we pat our backstop? I generally touch their helmet not the cp. Dangerous situation. Wow. This will all probably disappear withou much of a whimper, but still a black eye. May be something to take into consideration for all of us. Sad world we live in. Vilify the only person on the field without an axe to grind.

Kill the umpire. :shakehead:

I'm surprised that a guy w/ supposed D1 experience is working CDP.
I had an ACC guy in my crew a couple years ago.

Why?  It's summer.  Maybe he's doing it for charity or whatever.  I've been told there are all levels of umpires doing those games.

I was on a break with three other umpires and was told about this today. The way it was conveyed to me was that this particular umpire kept getting drilled and after another one nailed him, he told the catcher something along the lines of "how does this feel" and punches him either in the stomach or back (I forget exactly which).

There were a lot of things we were talking about and this just happened to come up. Really crazy stuff!

There was a PAC-12 guy my week, just doing it for fun... There was also a guy who said he was ACC, but there were many reasons to be doubtful. For one, he was not the best umpire or even near it... It was easy to correct him on some rules stuff when the umpires were talking at lunch. He also flaunted his "ACC" gear around constantly. Every game he worked he used his ACC cap and black shirt with ACC patch. He would even consistently come to dinner after a game still wearing that shirt... With the PAC 12 guy, he only told his crew in their introductions, and then word spread through his crew members... He never wore any PAC 12 gear the entire week.
